There is a thread on PilotsOfAmerica about this, there is an F16 driver that frequents there, he was one of the jets scrambled to shadow this guy. They followed him all the way.

If you look at the actual flight data log in Flight Aware, you can see by the varying altitudes/rate of climb he was hand flying the plane in the first part of the climb. After he made a course deviation the rate of climb, the leveling off at 18,900 ft cruising altitude, heading and airspeed were all rock steady, one of his Garmin Nav units coupled to the autopilot was flying the plane during that phase.

They probably started planning for the worst 30 minutes after his eta.
I couldn't imagine having to follow and watch a plane go down and be helpless.
