i need advice on getting engine rebuilt (250k miles) vs buying new crate engine. its a 2007 f150 with 4.6 v8

i have seen those "reconditioned" engines from those engine selling shops and those are junk, all they do is slap them together doing the bare minimum to work rather then doing a full rebuild properly.

has anyone had theirs rebuilt to suggest a good shop to do it?

or has anyone priced a crate engine? what are the costs of both options? i already know its not $350

I’m sure you can also look up the prices for the crate engines.

Just sell it and get a newer truck.

You’ll be upwards of $5K by the time you’re finished...and your truck would still only be worth $6-7k.

Why wouldn’t you just sell it for $4K and put that and the $5K you save toward a 12-14 model?

How's the rest of the truck? If you put in a new motor and the transmission blows up a week later you're going to be kicking yourself. I hate the thought of buying a new vehicle too, but someimes its the right decision.

I had that POS 4.6 years back,
No power and crap mpg (5.4 owners got better on both). Get 5.4, they probably more available too. GL

I know a place in BR, but honestly, I don't know why you would want to spend the money doing it.

Airline Autocenter in BR off Airline and Florida.

Is your engine just using oil? Is it knocking? what?

there are many reasons i want nothing to do with any truck made after 2010 so im not going to get into debates on my reasons for that other then saying i cant get what i already have (regular cab, v8, swb, 2wd) and thats what i want in any replacement truck

im ok spending $5k-$6k to fix this one knowing full well thats all its worth when im done.

the plan is to get the tranny rebuilt as new as well.

the idea is having a like new engine and tranny so its good for another 20 years

4.6 2 valve is one of the most reliable engines ford has built except Keakar's. Many a taxi and cop car running those engines over 500k miles. Used 100K engines are cheap and plentiful.

If this is the end game, find someone that builds racing engines and let him rebuild both. Pricey? Yes but when he's done they'll be better than crate ones.

What's so special about a 2007 f150? It could cost you as much as 8k or more to get the engine and slap it in there. Unless you do it yourself which you figure 4-5k for the engine plus all components and your time. I'd use the money as a downpayment on a Tundra.

He already said that he likes the truck but needs a new power plant.....I get it. When he's done, no payment and he's good for another decade or 2.

Have you informed your brakes, fuel system, exhaust, suspension, differentials, and electrical about these plans?
