re: Advice for leaving a job

Tell your manager face to face. Have a simple resignation letter in writing to provide at that meeting as well.
Should be common sense, but be gracious for the opportunity and try to leave them in a decent spot at the end of your two week (i.e., finish and transition things appropriately).

Short and sweet: Thanks for the opportunity to be a part of your organization. I've decided that it's time to resign and to move on to the next chapter in my life. Please accept this 2 weeks notice and let me know how I can help to make this a smooth transition for everyone.

No need except his character.
To OP, give and work your two weeks if they need you. Don't be a dick and bounce out leaving them in a lurch.

Upper deck that bitch on the way out.
Deuces.
Deuces.

All of this is great advice but you might want to make sure you're accepted first. If you don't know the branch I'm just going to go ahead and assume you haven't been yet.

I think I may copy and paste that

Job reference in the future

I'm leaning navy, would love to be a Seabee, but Air Force isn't off the table. Going to make my decision in 2-3 weeks after I talk to people in both branches.

Most federal and state agencies do very extensive background checks. The last place I worked had a fish and wildlife agent come to our office to meet with our boss about a former employee.
If he literally said a single negative thing the employee can sue. And likely win.
Most state agencies won't share negative info because it isn't worth the risk.
A lack of detail is usually enough to say no.

Might make up your mind as to what branch of the military you want to enlist in, then make sure you get accepted. Even if you sign up in Sept-Oct, it still might be a few months after that until you actually ship out for boot camp.
Shouldn't be anything to be nervous about when telling your boss that you're leaving to go join the military. A good boss would be proud of that kind of decision. Just be honest when you put in your notice and keep in mind that they may be a reference for you to list on your resume for future jobs.

Just be flexible. I went in to join the Air Force who walked me down the hall to the Navy and I ended up joining the Army.

You should. That's all you really need to say.

Dude, just type up a letter, be straight forward. It doesn't have to be long and detailed, just..
I am informing you that I am resigning from here two weeks from today.
It has been a privilege working here and I appreciate the opportunity to work here, but I will be moving on to something else.
If there is anything I can do to help in this transition please let me know.
Peace and suck my balls.

I've narrowed it down to 2 jobs from each branch except marines.
Navy:
Seabee or information tech.
USAF:
RPA (drone pilot), Bomber special integrated communication navigation mission systems.
Army:
Field artilery, radar repair.

This. Spot on. Giving 2 weeks is the professional thing to do. They may let you go that day after talking with HR. That's not an insult to you, but they know you aren't fully motivated to stay there.
If they do keep you, put your head down and work. Not saying you have to go balls to the wall, but don't be a distraction for anyone else that still works there.
Good luck man.

I think that reason speaks for itself unless your boss is some fricking commie liberal in which case frick him anyway.
