He will also talk a little in his sleep sometimes, without the video monitor, we would have gone in and probably woke him up trying to put him back to sleep.
Number one reason to get a video monitor, especially for new parents, is to learn what your baby does when he's asleep and when he's awake (which can change from month to month when they're infants). Babies make noises in their sleep, and not all of them cry when they're awake, especially when they get older and aren't necessarily waking just to eat. And some of them learn how to climb out of the crib before they even learn to walk.
And sometimes you just want to look at them while they sleep.
Another handy feature, which I'm sure I'll get shite for, is that you can turn off the sound and still be able to see them. It's useful to me when I'm trying to get some work done and need to focus during a nap time -- I don't need to hear the constant ticking of the swing or the sound machine that comes through the speakers at a higher, more annoying frequency. I can just silence it and set it next to me on the desk, and if a sound outside of those constant noises occurs, you get alerted with a vibration on some models, and on others there are very clear light indicators.
EDIT: One thing I'll add -- There are "full color" monitors and simple black and white ones. Don't feel like you need to spend any extra money on the color video, because when the room is dark and the camera is using night vision, everything is in black and white anyway.

Get a video monitor by Summer

Video all the way.
For all the reasons people said.
Get one that you can do multiple cameras incase you have another child, we still use it for my 4 year old and its basically serves as a video telecom system.

You will sleep much better when he is 6 weeks - 6 months with the video monitor. Its worth it.

Bingo.
My little dude will wake up in the middle of the night right now, hes teething, and the fact that I can see him while he cries tells me how bad it hurts.

We always had the non-video ones (oldest is 22) I would love to have the ones with video just to see what is going on. There is sometimes some silent stuff going on in our daughters' room because they know we can hear them.

my kids are older so the video thing really wasnt popular, but we never used any type of monitor.
you will hear them and for the first few weeks/months you will be in there ever 30 seconds because you think you heard something

Fin, you are a man after my own heart. My wife does kid stuff, I work. I love them, but I love her more...so whatever she wants, she is a hell of a lot better mom than I could ever be

Thanks for ALL of the input!!
I'm going to try and go through some of the brands mentioned and try to pick some out to look at online.

I wish my little one (18 months) could be put down for a nap. He refuses to nap in his crib. Somebody has to hold him.

We went with the video monitor and it has worked well. (for 2 mos. anyway)
It's more fun than you might think to watch your kid sleep!

We got the video monitor but you really couldnt see shite. I ended up getting a wireless ethernet cam and mounted it up above the crib and fed it back to a software dvr on my desktop pc. Its very clear and records anything going on.

That's your bad. But it's not too late. Read a book on getting your child to sleep in their crib
I crawled in the crib with mine more than once because he wasn't getting out and he wasn't sleeping in my bed
Congrats op. At first I was like a video monitor is stupid and overkill because I didn't have either. But after listening to everyone it would've been nice

Is it worth the money to get a video style monitor or is it just a waste of money?
Why do you need the monitor? I mean, if you child is crying, will you just look at the monitor and watch it to see if you really need to go in there or not?
Soon enough you will learn the difference between a hungry cry, a whine, a diaper cry, etc. The video monitors are a total waste IMO.

I disagree. Its much more important later on when they are rolling around and stuff though.
Here is the ipcam I hooked up.

Thats exactly what we do, how is that a total waste? Weve trained him to sleep in his crib, I dont want him to be taken out unless its absolutely necessary so if I can look at him while hes crying to figure out if I need to go in, it make my life MUCH easier.

Neither. You will hear the kids cry without it. Plus, a little crying doesn't hurt.
