Accident/insurance advice, weird situation

So earlier today I got in a very slight fender bender. I was in a hurry and really upset about something else, I changed lanes quickly, but did signal, but then the car in front stopped, I slammed on the brakes and the car behind hit me, pretty minor damage both sides though.
We were both n a hurry and got pictures of each other's insurance/IDs but neither wanted to get the police involved, but we somehow forgot to exchange numbers.
First off, how would either of us prove who is at fault with no police involvement?
Second, regardless of who is at fault, wouldn't it be in both our own interests to leave insurance out of it? Don't they raise your rates even if you're not at fault?
What kind of rate hike could I expect if I do use insurance? I have a 2010 Acura TL awd, haven't had an accident in five years, a ticket in 3 years, and current six month premium is around 480

do you currently have any kind of "accident free" discount?
I would get an estimate to repair (tell them that you will be paying out of pocket) to get a feeling for what you are talking about financially....don't be surprised if the repair estimate is a hell of a lot higher than you think it will be. that will tell you whether you want to involve your insurance, pay for it yourself, or just drive the car unrepaired.

Let the insurance co's settle it

Bad move. Always get a police report in case the other party changes their story later.

Not really

No, they do not.

If someone hits you from behind aren't they always at fault for not following at a reasonable distance?

Most of the time, but there are some instances where they may not be. Like when you swerve into someone's lane then slam on your brakes. And cut out the reasonable distance they were following behind the car your tried to squeeze behind.

I don't know how the reasonable man would feel about this, baw.

Exactly. Without a police report, maybe not exchanging phone numbers was a blessing. Take care of your own ride and go about your life.

Yep, it's known as the "swoop and squat" insurance scam.

I know this after the fact so it won't help you, but if the other person is at fault, make them request to not have the cops come. Then, if they request to not wait around for the cops, ask them to record a video statement on your phone or write and sign a statement and include address, name and license number on it, stating they hit you from behind.
But, you don't need his number if you have his insurance info. Call his company and file a claim on his policy number. They'll take your statement and then call him to get his statement. If he accepts liability, no problem...your car will be fixed. If he claims you were at fault or stories don't match up, that's where you'll possibly be screwed by not having a police report to corroborate your story.
In that case, you can file on yours and pay your deductible and let your company fight them and hope they resolve it, but it may end up as an at-fault, surchargeable accident against you.

If you are at fault and you all agree to that then you simply get his information call your insurance company and report it. I had to do this recently. It was not a hassle at all . It was a minor fender bender and I had not had an accident in at least eight years or more. My rates did not go up. I think the estimate was about $950

No, they do not.
This is not entirely true.

ALWAYS get a police report.

If it is coded as a not at fault in their system, it is true.

My roommate was driving my car after dropping me off at the airport and someone backed into him. They exchanged pics of drivers license and insurance cards, but didn't exchange phone numbers like jackasses. Well thankfully it was a company vehicle the guy was driving and the company told me he accepted fault when I called their HR and Public Safety Dept. Got in touch with his insurance and they took care of me by totaling my crappy older car and giving me $7k.
One piece of advice if an insurance company totals your car: never take the first offer. always ask for more money for your car.

You don't need a police report. In fact the ins co doesn't always accept the fault the way the police report assigns it. Police involvement is not necessary and if both agree it's much simpler not to get one.
You can both actually call ins right there at the accident making reports in front if each other. Videoing with phone is also a good idea.

I'm an agent, and this is an article from Time suggesting otherwise...

If you get into a car accident, you may wind up having to pay more for your insurance—even if you weren’t at fault. Four out of five of the leading auto insurers charge customers in 48 states more after a crash, regardless of cause, according to a new report released Monday by the Consumer Federation of America. (California and Oklahoma bar insurers from raising rates when an accident is someone else's fault.) The report, which surveyed car insurance quotes from the five biggest insurers in 10 cities, found premiums increased an average of about $300 a year when another driver crashes into you. Progressive was the worst offender, raising rates an average of almost 17% in every case where it was not illegal to do so, the CFA reported. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday. Geico and Farmers sometimes raised rates, while Allstate only “occasionally” increased premiums, according to the CFA. State Farm, meanwhile, never penalized drivers for not-at-fault accidents—the only company CFA analyzed that did not.

If they're following you to begin with, yes. If you abruptly changed lanes in front of them and slammed on the brakes I don't think the same rules apply.
