So far so good with the Mitisubishis in my house... I have 7 of 'em.

I put a Samsung in at the end of 2013. So far, it hasn't run six months without a problem. Low Freon, replaced the evaporator, now it's not cool again.
Ready to start over.

Get a Mitsubishi 9,000 or 12,000 BTU unit and you'll be stoked. Get a Diamond Contractor to install it and you get a 12 year warranty on it.

Cost? I'd like to put a three or four zone mini split in to cover my upstairs.

Mitsubishi will be the most expensive but it's got the best warranty, efficiency, quiet, longevity, etc. Here in Hawaii it's about $3k per bedroom from a Diamond Contractor. Probably $2,500 on the mainland.

I put a 1 ton (12,000 BTU) Daikin in my 2 car insulated garage and it has performed well so far.
Don't let Mitsubishi and Fujitsu fool you their systems are made in Indonesia, Thailand, Korea, and China also. It depends on the unit.
I wanted to try one of the ebay ones but parts availability can be a problem with the lesser brands. I settled on a Daikin as the local supply house was having a sale and having a local supplier was important to me.
I self installed but have all of the A/C tools, Nitrogen, vacuum pump, Micron gauge, etc.
It is important to redo the flares on the line set with a quality flaring tool, pressure test with N2, and evacuate to less than 500 microns prior to releasing the factory charge. #1 problem with these systems is poorly made flares and over tightening of said flare fittings. Once you lose the charge you have to refill based on weight since there is typically no high side port.
For that size space if it well insulated a 9600 BTU would probably work.
If you can't DIY I would ask your preferred AC contractor which ones they have good luck with. I wouldn't deal with a guy who hasn't been installing them for a while.

We enjoy our Gree. Mitsubishi was, admittedly, out of out price range.
Installed last summer and coils like a champ.
The variable speed compressor is an awesome feature.

I have two four zone systems (4 ton compressors)... I think it was around $15000 for everything... that's air handlers, branch boxes, compressors, hard wired controls, line sets, and duct work for the ducted air handlers. So... you're probably looking at about 1/2 that, perhaps a little less, for a four zone system.
BTW... That doesn't include labor... I self installed.

Heard good things about Daikins.
Heard horror stories about the Samsung. As usual Samsung is trash.

This is good advice.
