A WWII Veteran Gets More Than $65k in Donations After Getting Scammed

PHOENIX— Jack Holder is trying to figure out how to write a thousand thank-you notes. That would be one for every person who helped him get back his life — and his life savings — after a crushing loss.
Three weeks ago, the 94-year-old World War II veteran, a Sun Lakes resident, had never heard of GoFundMe. Holder said he didn't know there were websites where people could donate money to help total strangers.

Do you think its the guy's fault for falling for the scam? My grandfather, who was (still is, but he passed away) a WWII veteran, would give to any charity or asking for donations. I think these guys grew up in a different time which makes them an easy target for any type of scams.

Just sent him an email :
I'm so glad gofundme could get you back on your feet. More vets could use your help! Just follow the PayPal link below.
If you have any money leftover please consider donating it to our veterans who were scammed just like you.
I'd like to include a thank you card so please provide your social security number, date if birth, and full legal name so I can check and see if anyone from your old platoon or who served with you can benefit from your donation.
Thanks,
American Joe

I need to start a gofundme page. I need to think of a good idea so people will donate to it.

Like 90% of the people who start a gofundme page, you just have to be a dumbass that makes bad decisions. You should qualify easily.

Tell them you should be paid for keeping the OT moral.

Hell, those old people get scammed all the time. They would give the shirt off their back.

That's what I am saying. People start gofundme pages for unbelieveable reasons and in most cases I would feel like anyone who gets scammed, its on them, but these guys are such easy targets I am glad he got his money back.

The only thing keeping my MIL from getting scammed nonstop is she asks me and my wife before making any decisions about anything.
We've yet to say, "no that's not a scam, that's legit."

Is it mostly people calling asking her to give or through the mail? My grandpa use to give to people who called. He thought he was helping everyone out, but when he got to the point he wasn't able to keep track of things on his own, his kids realized he was giving monthly donations to several "charities".

No need for a good idea. Just ask for cash.
In the pre-Internet days, there was a fellow who bought classified ads in several papers around the country with a simple plea like: "Help needed! Please send money to P.O. Box ..."
He made some good $$$.

he wasn't donating money for charity ... he was responding to an email that told him he'd won some money, so, yes, it's his fault he lost it ... not complaining about his recovery, but it is his fault he lost the money ... glad he got his money back and hope they catch the scammers and put them behind bars for a very long time (internet scammers should be put away for life, imo) ... the woman who set up the gofundme page deserves a great deal of recognition herself (she is unemployed and a mother of 3) ...
