Were more we're more than a decade from a manned mission to Mars. And if we got there, says nothing about our ability to actually go any further than Mars or inhabit another planet.

This is the plot of Isaac Asimov's Nemesis. A stellar close pass is actually potentially catastrophic. The gravitational disturbance of a closely passing star can disrupt planetary orbits and make life on Earth impossible. I'll be long gone by then though.

I mean, there's nuclear war, terrorism, and other natural ways humanity could be killed off before then. The species as a whole seems to have little priority other than maintaining the status quo.
