True up through the Vietnam era. The infrequent AA combat since then has mostly been one guy getting a missile off before the other guy knew he was there.

What happens when everyone has stealth fighters though? Won't be able to lock on missiles from far away.

There's an outfit down in Houston that sells rides in an A-4 and an F-4(and some other things.) I think it's about 10 grand.

Maverick should have made a peace offering of oily, shirtless volleyball and fist pumping motorcycle rides, then there would have been no dogfighting

Mike Vick would hate my version of Top Gun

Yeah I'm thinking the last actual dogfight was maybe in the 80s...maybe in the Middle East?

I'm almost positive an American pilot hasn't been in one since Vietnam. Like you said, they've all been Beyond Visual Range since then. (As far as I know). I think all 30-something kills in Desert Storm were BVR.

Then we'll all be glad that pilots still have weapons schools like Top Gun.

So my question is: What should Maverick had done there? If he stays covering Hollywood, what's to prevent Viper from getting on their tails and taking them both out?

Short answer, if he stays with his wingman and Viper comes back around, one can evade while the other falls back and engages Viper.

Mav could have baited him into a rolling vertical scissors, then it would have been all over

Well, at that point all he has to do is let him get real close then slam on the brakes and he will fly right by

The only answer.

And when he gets to the top he's got to remember to trade all that altitude for speed.

I like the part where they have to eject over mountainous/desert terrain, and they end up in the ocean.

I always figured that they were flying somewhere around San Diego and he flew it over the ocean to avoid crashing into a populated area.

It's been a while since I've seen that, but weren't they at Fallon? I guess it could be Lake Tahoe, or Hollywood trickery!

I read a book once about the guys who started Top Gun. I think it was called Wings of Eagle or something. Those guys make Maverick look like a huge pussy. I'll see if I can find a link.
