There is no excuse you can give to make that incident right. We lied through our teeth about it. We lied about it descending on a bombing run when it was really ascending in a normal flight path. It was squawking as a civilian and most of the times they were hailed it was on a frequency they could not receive. Our ship was in their waters and the airliner was still over Iranian airspace. We f***ed up hard there.
IIIRC we quietly paid danages the families several years later.
My bet is on trigger happy air defense being the cause here too.

Very interesting that the media is blaming mechanical failure in the initial report. When was the last time the media knew what happened in an airplane crash while the wreckage is still smoldering?
Impressive indeed..
It's plausible the pilot(s) communicated their issue as they were dealing with it.
Not sure what would cause the fire in the air though.

How quickly is Boeing scrambling right now to get people in the field and look for evidence of foul play?
Boeing, like other airline manufacturers, typically assists in crash investigations. However, that effort in this case could be affected by the U.S. sanctions campaign in place on Iran since President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers in May 2018.

There are more than enough pictures hitting the internet that will help them determine what the hell happened. The post in political talk has several of them.

They definitely shot it down.
Yup, have a friend on Facebook saying they have admitted already that one of their Sam sites shot it down.
Guess I should have said the friend works for one of those lettered agencies thats all over the world.

That is an old tweet. Not saying incorrect, but that tweet was from when the news broke. It is not new information from the 'technical difficulties.'

Translated for you Scruffy:
“News of the Ukrainian plane crashing was a result of an accidentally firing of a Iranian missile”

Neither is definitively stating that it is due to an Iranian missile.
It very well may be due to technical difficulties, but there are WAY too many people out there who are trying to frame Iran in the best light possible, including some of our own news agencies.
Considering the situation, “Iranian misfire” is more likely, ISO.
A “mechanical failure” at this time is just unlucky as frick.

Something is definitely fricky

No doubt. I imagine their defenses are on high alert so it wouldn't be surprising.
No one else is going with that explanation and Al-whatever put it out over 4 hours ago. No one picked up them as a source even though it would be a much better headline.

It is just extremely odd for this to happen at this time, especially if it is actually due to mechanical failure.
Hell, Iran will have a hard time convincing people they didn’t shoot it down.
