A Loser's Realization about God and Stuff

Do you rely on God to provide for you or do you provide for yourself?
Everything thing we have is ultimately provided by God, but it seems that the quantity and quality of our possessions and life is dependent on our own efforts.
What's more useful?
Praying about a job or job hunting?
Praying about a finding spouse or going out and finding one?
Praying about a good career or going to school and putting the work in?
Praying for good health or going to the gym and eating right?
Because you won't get anything of these things without doing the latter.
I'm pretty much convinced that if you don't go out and get what you want in life, God will let you sit on your arse and watch you waste your life away.
I think God expects us to work towards a better life for ourselves and our families, but God isn't going to do it for us.
I'm slowly realizing we can:
1. Pray and sit on our arse, have a shite life, blame God for it and then die.
or
2. Pray and work our arse off, have a chance at a better life, grudgingly give God all the credit and then die.

One and two are both wrong. If you pray, it should be to provide comfort.
I'm not religious but me and my daughter pray at night because it comforts her and teaches her to be thankful for what she has.
Praying to receive blessings, on the other hand, is a waste of time.

God isn't real
To act like you know for sure one way or the other is stupid.
The thing that pisses me off the most is when religious people act like non believers can't live a fulfilling life. I'm on a giant rock floating through space and we have no idea how or why we are here, and to top it all off I get to spend my life with people I love, including my children. If that wasn't good enough, there's also music, art, books, college football, and sex. I'm having a fricking blast.

I didn't want to get into this. Frankly, I'm not sure that saying is biblical. We are all spiritual dead. We are incapable of helping ourselves. So, in fact, God helps those who can't help themselves.
But then again, we are both spirit and flesh. We have bodies and our daily lives to deal with. But I don't see me doing 80% of the work and God doing 20%. It sounds stupid and like I said, I'm not sure it's a biblical saying.

Certainly it’s a combination of both. God gives us abilities and expects us to use them, but he also wants us to trust him and seek him for wisdom about the future things we can’t envision.
Example; we don’t pray about a new purchase, and a few days later, we lose our job.
If we had sought God about the matter, he could have lead us to not make the purchase.
