I've read that they were all on strong psychiatric drugs (not sure about Roof).

The Columbine killers are still the most unsettling to me. Probably because they just seemed like two guys that everyone in America went to school with. Only thing that separated them from everyone else prior to the crime is that one was a charismatic psychopath and the other was clinically depressed and following the others' lead.

All three are very mentally ill.
