re: A friendly reminder that it is not too late to get your flu shot this season.

Its possible that they got a strain that isn't protected by the flu shot, but the way you describe it, only people that got the shot caught the flu. Also in in a hospital setting everyone has to get the flu shot, so I have to conclude that you are a damned liar. So GFY.

And he says that got it within 2 weeks. And it's pretty standard knowledge that it takes at least 2 weeks for the shot to protect you. So means that they were already exposed to the flu before getting the shot.
Also....there are other respiratory viruses running rampant this year. He seen the medical charts of all his coworkers and saw each of their flu swab results come back positive?
Human rhinovirus is all over the place here. Supposed to be just like a cold but we've already had a baby die from it at my hospital. And it's also good ol RSV season as well.

Out of those 15 about 8-9 of them had full blown flu within 2 weeks, along with family members that got the flu shot. Out of those that didnt get the shot.... ZERO has had the flu
But not really.

And he wonders why the rest of the hospital typically hates hospital admins

The flu feels like a 2 week long hangover combined with being runover by a steamroller. Last time I had it I thought I was gonna die. I was preparing my will. I'm cool with a little bit of mercury.

Seems like everyone I know who gets one either gets sick afterwards with the flu or feels like crap for a week.
'Seems' being the operative word. How often do people make a conversation point of 'I got a vaccine, and absolutely nothing happened!' -- virtually never.
Even worse, is the factor of mistaken attribution to the flu shot of things with glaringly obvious, much more likely causes.
'I had the flu shot, went out with my friends that night, drank two bottles of tequila, and felt like hell the next morning! That damned flu shot!'
'I was at my doctor's office, to get a renewal for my IBS meds, and he mentioned the flu vaccine, so I took him up on it while I was in there. I forgot to get my 'script filled-- you know, the one that keeps me from getting the raging shits-- but sure enough, the next day, that damned flu shot had me in the bathroom all day!'

I live with a nurse, my sister is a nurse. I have to here the horror stories every afternoon. If that won't scare you into getting a flu shot nothing will.

Some rough shite going around, especially in Louisiana. Get your shot.

The only year I've got the flu in the past 10+ years was the only year I got the flu. Thankfully it was not a very bad strain that year.
Now back in the early 90's (94 or 95) I got a case of the flu that just about did me in. That was some scary shite. There was about a 24 hour period where my fever was so high I was in and out, mostly in some sort of dazed semi-conscious state. According to my then GF my fever got almost up to 105 during that time. The most odd thing about it was after I recovered for about two months everything tasted odd. It was like something had happened to my taste buds.

Been getting the flu shot since 2007 and never got the flu.
Sometimes I may be a lil achy and run a low grade fever the first 24 hours after the shot but I realize that is my body responding to the shot so I plan accordingly when I get the shot and make sure I'm not working the next night so I can rest in case I'm achy.

Hey, Nurse, maybe you can answer my question. Look at my post about the flu I got back in the early 90's. Have you ever heard of it messing up someone's sense of taste like that?

I've got a deep cough, bad chills, night sweats, and body aches. I live in southern Louisiana...what am I looking at? Flu or respiratory illness
Posted on 1/13/14 at 1:48 pm to MrFreakinMiyagi
I've seen h1n1 and other strains of the flu at work. Taken care of kids that coughed on me and we find out later on they were flu positive. Makes me very glad I got the shot.
However I also realize it doesn't protect from all strains so I take care of myself even more right now and wash my hands even more than I do as a nurse(which is already a lot). I exercise and try to get enough rest and avoid stress as much as I can to keep my immune system up. Try to drink more water than I do. Take extra vitamin c(even though the whole vitamin thing is up for debate right now).
Basically I don't let the shot be my only line of defense against the flu.

No I have not.
Don't feel bad. I've asked others about and nobody has ever heard of the flu doing this. I think it has to do with the fact me fever hovered so high (I think 104.7 was the number)for so long. Course, that's just a guess.
what happened was at first I could not taste anything. Within a few days I could taste some but everything tasted the same. It took weeks before things started going back to normal. Really weird stuff.

Got a flu shot for the first time ever. After seeing coworkers and friends go down for weeks at a time, I said frick it. Its free and the pharmacist at walgreens who administered the shot was cute. She touched my arm. Score!

Only a dr and a rapid flu swab can tell you if you have the flu.
Quit thinking that of you have the symptoms it is automatically the flu. So many other respiratory stuff has the same or similar symptoms.
Aggravates me when people claim they had the flu when they never got tested to actually confirm that is what they had.
