Assuming you actually want an answer, here you go. This will be long though. Its a complicated combination of things.

Thank you for all of that. I never really thought of what being a vet is like… I guess I thought it was a neat profession to spend time with and helping cute creatures. Your post was enlightening and appreciated.

I worked 12 hour shifts ICU for a good many years.Had 3 day weekend off every other, then worked.3 days-F,S,S. every other.
I liked it for the most part. Some weekends got out of stuff I didn’t want to do,also missed things I wanted to do.some times.
I liked having days off during the week,so that was a plus.
Last couple years, approaching 60 , I was wiped out on Monday after working 3 day weekend.

It wasn’t good for mothers with children still at home.Saw a lot of them quit because of that plus all the 3-400 lb pts we started getting in late 90’s.

Dr. Pol is 80 and is on call 7 days a week.

(Or so we are led to believe.)

It's not bad to have to work on weekends.. You can make appointments easier and most of us in 30's and 40's don't really go "out: anyway in weekends.

You must not have kids. Working on the weekends with kids is terrible, and I work a lot of weekends and have kids. Luckily I own my own business so I have some flexibility. But I’ve routinely gone into the office before 6 on a Saturday to finish something before my daughter’s soccer game and then went back to the office. I was lucky. There’s a lot of things especially with kids that only happen on the weekends. Most of the time, as a professional, most of your friends work 8-5s. So when you work they are on and vice versa.

ETA: oh, and 3 day weekends? holidays? All different and sucks when everyone you know is off but you have to work the Holiday weekend. Occasionally, not a big deal. Everyone, sucks

I do have kids. 13 and 10. They don't play soccer anymore and not much going on the weekends for us.
