AC technicians are not allowed to service R22 systems anymore. They just change the whole system to R410A
So, if you have an R-22 system and it's low on freon, you can't get it recharged?

I was just quoted $4500 for an entire 3 ton unit (inside and outside)

I could as of last year. R22 is insanely expensive though. Something like $100 per pound.

That's not that bad of a price.

Sure you can. They just aren't making more of it so it is expensive as the frick. Don't know if it is fact. But I "heard" they aren't making more of it so the prices went through the roof. Most AC guys will recommend you just change the unit if you have 3k in work with low freon

Yeah, company here charged my dad 150 bucks for the first pound and 49.95 for the second to recharge his. He needs a new evap coil, but wanted to wait until fall if he could. He really shouldn't have tried to wait. I was over there last night, and I think alot of his freon has leaked out. It was hot as crap upstairs. I talked to him this morning, he said it was 75 when he went to bed and got down to 71 by morning, and he was satisfied, and my mom has never been hot a day in her life. I'm thinking of just having it done for him for Fathers day or something, but he gets weird about stuff like that.

There are other ways of politely declining work than charging an outrageous price. Especially in today's age where the power of wireless data and social networking and social media can eviscerate your hard-earned reputation in half of a heartbeat with a single misstep along those lines.
It takes a person and/or company years to build a reputation and only minutes to destroy it.

Always get more than one quote when it's that much.

That's why I am asking here so I can get a better feel on who to get the other quotes from.

Call Carl Rogers, Southeast Heating and Air. The most honest AC guy in the city. ....and yes, that price is ridiculous. Your welcome.
This. I've been using him for many years.

Recently had a check up/service on my 3 units. Found 2 or 3 capacitors out of range. $20 part at most charged me $65 each iirc. Needed a contactor changed on one unit. Founfd the box in the trash when he left. $110 for a $15 part says Amazon. In addition to the $79 service call for each unit. $50 or 60 for one pound of freon. all in was like $600 for what I believe to be little more than $100 in parts and an hour and a half labor.

Evaporator failed after 13 months of light use, replacment was $560 for labor and Freon, part was covered.

Get at least three quotes. I got four last time I had my home A/C unit replaced. Prices vary, big time. Some A/C companies think that their units are gold plated, while some companies price them how they should be (fairly).

Replace the whole freaking thing and find a handyman to install for 600 bucks.
I wouldn't trust a handyman to do it right and flow nitrogen while brazing, draw a proper vacuum, etc.
