re: A Black Fraternity Has Beef With Boosie Because He Wore Their Letters

I remember in HS, there were a few black teachers.. Who were older.. Who would have their sorority letters on their license plate.. One was an English teacher and her sorority was the same colors as the school colors so she would wear her letters on "school spirit" days. And she took that shite serious.
I didn't really know at the time if it was a black or white thing, but when I got to college, got older.. I realized that at HBCU schools, when they have homecoming or something, it really is a homecoming. Like, if you are in a sorority or fraternity you have a bond for life with everyone who was (or still is.. Not sure how it works) in the same sorority/fraternity.

It is. There's a difference between wearing a comemmorative party T-Shirt from a fraternity or sorority and wearing the actual letters. If you wear it on campus someone will talk to you about it. If you wear it out to a bar, chances are it'll get ugly fast. It's like going out and buying a high school letter jacket without earning it.
I looked at it as kind a stolen valor situation. Not quite the same thing but, like you said, it wasn't earned.

Most Kappas I know are either queer or prettyboys. None of them are going to come across dem tracks to tell him to take it off.

Black fraternities take this way more serious than white fraternities.
You almost never see a white guy past college age wearing greek letters. It's not uncommon for middle aged black dudes to wear fraternity paraphernalia.

I see middle aged black women with their car tags always slowing me down in traffic.

Did somebody just compare this to Stolen valor lol. This is too funny. Don’t get me wrong I don’t see why you would want to wear letters in your weren’t in that fraternity. But give me a break on the disrespect thing lol. A fraternity isn’t something to be respected in the first place. It’s just a frat, I don’t mean that in a negative way but it isn’t an organization that the public owes respect to in anyway.

Black fraternities put their pledges through hell during initiations, their membership is earned and respected. That's why they're pissed. Dude didn't go through shite....
Did he even go to college...?
Did he even go to college...?

quote:No one said that it was on the same level as stolen valor. The level of what you've earned depends on the fraternity chapter. You don't have to fricking storm Iwo Jima to have some respect in your life. If you've ever worked for anything in your life you'll understand. If not, good luck with your pod person life.
A fraternity isn’t something to be respected in the first place.

It is disrespectful. Why are you wearing letters that you didn't earn?

You would really fight someone because they’re wearing “your” letters. My god some people take that shite way too serious

Drop the ignorance and do some research on why black fraternities/sororities were founded in the first place.
Also, do some research in the footprint these orgs have in the black community.

Putting emotions aside, the two situations are similar. He wore symbols that are associated with an organization and culture he isn't affiliated with and that he did not earn. You may not like fraternities and feel they deserve little respect but that is not how they are viewed in the black community.

guess he likens it to being a fan of a sport's team.
If you wear a sports team's stuff without some legitimate connection I think you're a tool. For an NFL team that just means living in its little part of the country. For a college team it means actually attending the college.
Not as big a deal as frat letters, but it does look dumb.
