After the initial disaster, Haig resigned himself to smaller but equally ineffectual advances, and more than 1,000 Allied lives were extinguished for every 100 yards gained on the Germans. Even Britain’s September 15 introduction of tanks into warfare for the first time in history failed to break the deadlock in the Battle of the Somme. In October, heavy rains turned the battlefield into a sea of mud, and on November 18 Haig called off the Somme offensive after more than four months of mass slaughter

I remember when the tank was first used in combat. In fact, it's the earliest memory I can recall.

Pretty awesome to see how the role of the tank has evolved from infantry support, to full out armor vs armor warfare, back to infantry support.

I know that's probably not entirely accurate, but the vision of Cold War generals of all out armored warfare never really materialized.

That's primarily because there's not been another European war on the scale of WWII. But that's not to say there's not been a good deal of classic armored warfare. See the Arab/Israeli wars, the Iran/Iraq War of the 80's, the First Gulf War, and even the wars between India & Pakistan. There's also been some pretty sharp armored engagements in places like the Ukraine and Georgia.

There's a great BBC miniseries on Netflix right now and one of the episodes is the Brits using their tanks for the first time in WWI.

ETA: It's called "Our World War" The tank episode was really good, but the first episode where they're trying to hold a bridge was as good as the best "Band of Brothers" episode. Was epic.

IMDB - 8.1 / 10

During World War I, British troops face the horrors of the Battle of Mons in 1914, internal strife in 1916 and innovative tank warfare in 1918.

Highly recommend if you're interested in this type of show.

That would be a terrible idea. They don't have the upper body strength to meet the minimum requirements for loading the main gun (has to be done in 4 seconds at a minimum) or even doing things like mounting the .50 cal, or repairing a thrown or broken track. There's also the issue of having the strength to do maintenance and repairs to the breech block of the main gun. Hell, most women probably could not even open the drivers hatch on an Abrams or raise the seat to see out the driver's hatch when unbuttoned.

It's not the ladies' fault that we have shitty tank-designers making those things. Get better tanks and give the ladies the wheel bro.

Or do you just hate women?

I love women. That's why I'd never want to see one trying to crew a tank.

Think of the selfies they could take while tanking around the battlefield.

Women should be tank drivers. It will save taxpayers tons of money because we can pay them 2/3 as much as men

It's one thing to shoot the gun but do you really want women behind the wheel of a 20 ton vehicle? Think about it bro

Yeah, but they can't drive a tank and yak on a cell phone at the same time.

Plus we'd have to pay them 3x as many hours trying to park.

They're actually closer to 70 tons nowadays.

At least we don't have to worry about women in combat. They'll get lost before the find the battle

Women are great drivers. Mrs P may have gotten in a half dozen wrecks in the last year but not one of those were her fault. It's a pretty amazing record.
