DV - I love the old A7V - shows that some early designers were thinking of tanks as ground vehicle equivalents to ships - and, because of the speeds back then, probably pretty accurate:

It's always amazed me how the Germans failed to realize the potential of the tank during WWI. Had they started pumping out A7V's in large numbers and had them in time for Operation Michael in the spring 1918, they very well may have won the war or at least forced a more favorable peace and saved the German Empire.

From what I've read, it was pure hell for the crews of the WWI tanks. The temps would get to crazy high levels, way over 100 degrees. Then there was the issue of fumes as the engine was literally inside the crew compartment. Add on top of that all the gasses from firing the MG's & cannons. These tanks had nothing you could call a ventilation system. They could barely see or breath.

If I had to pick a favorite (other than the beloved Abrams that I crewed long ago), I'd have to go with this....
Some units still had the M60A3 when I enlisted but I never served on one.

Made taking a leak much easier. We didn't have that option in the Abrams. And we didn't have even close to as much room inside either. One things we did have though was a driver's station that sat you in pretty much the same position as a lazyboy recliner.

1. You can't eat MRE's for any amount of time without farting... a lot.
2. The smells inside the tank usually overpower the farts anyway. They tend to smell like a mixture of mildew, hydraulic oil, cordite, and GP grease.

That might be why there were no Taco Bell's on any army bases. You usually had two choices, the chow hall or Burger King.

Not just the tanks, but I always thought it crazy the advancements in all weaponry from the beginning of WWI to the end of WWII. Just in that short period of time you go from rickety planes for reconnaissance to dropping nukes.

I was in a M1 Abrams. It was a hot day, very hot. The heat can make the main gun rounds actually swell and that's what happened here. I was in the drivers compartment during a live fire exercise. We were going down range and when the loader went to ram a round in the main gun, it stuck with a few inches left to go before it tripped the breech block to close. They called a cease fire on the range, got the rest of the crew out of the turret. But due to the position of the turret when this all happened, I could not get out of the driver's compartment. I was stuck in there until they could remove the round and they could not move the turret with the round stuck due to the fact it could go off and they would have had to position the turret off the safe area of the range to get me out. They first tired using the gun rammer poles to knock the round out the back of the gun. That didn't work so they got a guy from maintenance with a sledge hammer and a block of wood to beat the round in far enough to trip the breech block to close.
