Kenya is pretty unsafe these days. Nairobi is still relatively safe but it's not safe outside the city anymore.

Addis Ababa isn’t exactly remote

There was a hotel bombing in Nairobi just a few months ago.

You been getting a lot of calls from people free falling to their deaths lately?
How the frick would anyone know when someone passes out or if they are conscious before slamming into the ground in a massive collision with fire burning the plane up....
So you’ve never heard of a black box

Is there a rational reason to avoid the Max8 at this point?
Only 350 or so have been delivered to airlines worldwide on a book of 4,700 orders. There have now been 2 accidents already since October.
Boeing has an existing warning message out to all 737 Max owners stating that a false sensor indicator can cause the plane to suddenly nose dive......

It’s crazy that in such a remote part of the world on a random flight that 8 Americans were on board. Guessing it had to do with charity/church mission type stuff.
Ethiopian Airlines is trying to become the hub of Africa. It is in a great spot just like Dubai/Doha for international travel. It isn't odd or "remote" at all.

that’s when you order a bunch of in-flight alcohol to prepare for the landing.
Xanax 2mg and a couple of glasses of wine and you won't care if you live or die.

plane crash is probably my number one irrational fear
Seems rational to me.
My dad investigated crashes.
First time I flew commercial, age 18, after stewardess pointed out the exits, asked if we had questions.
Hits the buzzer.
Ding ding.
Yes.
Where is my parachute?
No one gets them.
I puked.

That’s for the pilots and if you are in a nose dive at 33,000 feet, you are going to pass out, trained or not. Pilots also don’t have to wait for depressurization to get their masks on

I think the rapid change in altitude causes most people to pass out if the plane essentially falls out of the sky, no ?
No. If the plane remains pressurized during the fall, then the passengers will remain conscious, albeit terrified. If depressurization occurs at high altitudes, then passengers will lose consciousness quickly unless they have access to oxygen masks.
In the case of the Air France 747 in 1996 that came apart due to a fuel tank explosion, those passengers who didn’t die in the the blast were instantly killed upon exposure to the high altitude air. A few of them may have had time to gasp but because they were moving at hundreds of kilometers per hour, most died immediately.

CVR and FDR.

I'm right with God (I think, although I may get reprimanded by Saint Peter for some of my posts here) so if I go, I won't go with regret for the past and am okay with my family's future.
I don't worry about takeoff or landing, but cruising at 33k freaks me out a bit. Just the idea of falling out of the sky at that height and having to deal with it for a few minutes is scary as hell
I generally sleep like a baby before taking off, and wake up many times after the stews have handed out drinks.

That’s the second large plane to crash in a couple weeks. There was that 767 cargo plane a couple weeks ago. What’s going on?? And with the 767, they said pilot “lost control”. Can an OT pilot explain to me how a pilot just loses control of a commercial airplane?

Why does this matter? It’s a sad story to all of us no matter the background of the dead.
B/c instead of being a horrible tragedy for 1 country it's a horrible tragedy for 33 countries.

Someone else posted this, but you don’t want to know how many things are considered “known issues” when a plane is certified for service.
I work in the Aerospace Industry and I can tell you it makes you look at flying (even a simple 30 minute flight) differently...

Structural failure.
Loss of situational awareness.

Not a pilot but there’s a billion different things that could happen to cause a pilot to lose control of a plane.
