The song reads more like a poem in that it doesn’t have a chorus and tells a story. Is that what you’re getting at?
sort of like a ballad?

Such a great song befitting that tragedy.

Has some pretty incredible lines in it that really hit home.

That's the line I think of first whenever this song comes up or I see something about the Edmund Fitzgerald

It’s amazing what words in a specific order can evoke. It’s like magic.

it's been a while since I've seen him but I've always liked that Canadian style "folk rock, " or whatever it's called, he used to be pretty good at working a room, I've seen him in a couple of pretty small venues, that's even better for his style

If you like GL you should try John McCutcheon
Christmas In the Trenches
I post this one every year in my Christmas Truce thread, but I can’t tell the story any better than He.
Also Streets of Sarajevo is one that not many know but always struck me as incredibly beautiful.
Tragedy can create Beauty

Still a hotly debated topic. Why did the big ship go down? Negligence? McSorley pushing too hard? A "three sisters" rogue wave? Did they bounce off the six fathom shoal? Defective hatch covers? So many questions.
Computer models using historic weather data show the size and distance between waves sunk the ship. The waves were so high and far enough apart that the bow and stern were riding waves while the middle of the vessel was suspended in air, thus causing it to snap in half due to weight of the cargo.

When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin'
"Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya"
At seven PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said
"Fellas, it's been good to know ya"
eerie !
What's eerie is that Gordon Lightfoot knew what the old cook said.

Supposedly the "seas" on Lake Superior can get worse than is typically seen on the ocean in hurricanes.

It’s my understanding hatch covers were defective and engineers in Superior had said the Fitz shouldn’t be sailing, but that was overruled by the ship company and we see what happened.
That’s what I’ve got from a friend who had relatives working in the Superior shipyards back in the 70s

I’ve written at least 2 parodies of this song.
Funny. I wrote one too with the St. Louis Blues years before winning the Cup.

Then why did it break in half? I think the theory computer models have shown is more likely. It was a long, heavy boat riding high waves.

I remember watching a documentary that theorized the ship nose dived and hit bottom, causing it to break in half.

Didn't someone write a Hillary Clinton parody as well?

Really is a great song. I think Gordon Lightfoot is still touring, or at least was Pre covid.
