If you have a local commute and can charge at home, no issue other than replacement battery worries.

Did they get a lot worse in the 70s and 80s?

The cheapest car built today will outlast anything from that era.

*Mostly due to fuel injection and much tighter manufacturing tolerances for all parts of the car.

All of this is true, but if performance competition and manufacturing efficiency improvements had been allowed to run their natural course, these improvements would have come about naturally.
Performance and efficiency go hand in hand and maybe they would still be building cars that guys love to work on.

because of the inadequate charging infrastructure. Thirty-five percent of global respondents said the public network isn't good enough yet.

Buy and install a 240V home charger and it’s fine for commuting.

It’s not ready for road trips yet.

Plus it goes 0-60 in 3.6 seconds.

This. 0-60 in right at 4 seconds, quiet as a whisper... AND... mine is a Volvo Polestar PHEV, so I can go as far as I want, and the car will manage the power usage so if I am going to say... Nashville... I'll get to a charger with right at 1% battery left. Chargepoint charging is free for 3 years... it's a rock solid car... wouldn't trade it for anything... well... except for maybe another one...

Zero regrets. And yes, there have been some software update glitches that were quickly sorted out, but nothing major.

The path forward, seems to me, is the PHEV. Until such time (if ever) that they get a robust charging infrastructure.

I know two Tesla owners and one Mach E owner. They all love their cars. If they aren’t right for your needs, don’t buy one.

You can’t even drive any of them to an actual 1% state of energy. They have reserves to protect the power electronics and prevent the need for a black start.

Safety and environmental features are exactly why cars are so awful now, and after a few years, aren't worth fixing.

Yeah, because cars from the 60s could routinely go 200k miles. This car quality nostalgia some have is strange.

It’s mostly because new cars confuse people and throw in some member berries. People love the idea of a big block with a carb and how easy it was to work on but forget that you had to work on it a lot to keep all 200hp running.

With a couple engine and transmission rebuilds.

Up nort' here they usually rusted out before making it that far.

Dad told me of taking in 2 year old '73 square bodies they had to replace the doors on they rusted so fast.

While it's true that the older vehicles would start using oil and needing repair earlier, a guy with decent mechanical/electrical skills could keep them going and do most repairs in his own garage. Parts were pretty cheap too and readily available.
I have a couple of old vehicles(including a 62 year old truck that gets driven a couple of times a week) and some newer model vehicles.
Those newer models will not be on the road 50 years from now.

It's a PHEV. And besides... "1%" according to the car is really like 20% left... they (at least Volvos) won't really go below the 20% reserve, as I understand it it uses that as any other hybrid does... to assist with starting, more power to the rear wheels when needed, that sort of thing. But for pure EV driving... I can only get anywhere from 36-42 miles... and the preconditioning when it's cold as crap outside will eat up about 4 or 5 miles of range. It is what it is. Fast as crap. For not a crap ton of money.
