It wasn't the Mayans. It was the "experts" that said since the Mayan calendar ended that day then the world would also. The Mayans actually said life would continue.

I was really concerned that day, I remember it well. We were trying to juggle christmas with family in different cities and my sons first birthday. It was very chaotic.
