Bruce McCandless took the first ever untethered trip into space. He was also part of the team that designed the propulsion jet pack.
Meh. He never reached out to the muslims.

Right.
But saying he is an engineer is both unfunny and doesn’t make it obvious I’m joking.
Not sure how you turn that to “not reading the book.”
Especially as the book does say he is on the mission as the botanist, having formal education in it and running experiments on plants in microgravity for the mission. The maintenance side was his add on specialty. No formal education in anything engineering.

Had something gone wrong? Goodbye Bruce McCandless.
Apparently if the MMU (jet pack) failed, Challenger's commander (Vance Brand) would've been able to manuver the shuttle to McCandless (he never got more than a few hundred feet away for the spacecraft)

What’s up with McCandless males and doing unordinarily risky stuff?

Larry Hagman was doubling as a real astronaut when he was filming I Dream of Jeannie.
