Watching the strike films was the whizz.
Auditorium went nuts when showing one of our birds putting a 2000 lb'er straight through the third floor window into the room that was where Saddam was supposed to be that night. Think he had gone for a walk outside or something and wasn't there when the Pave-Tak guided mk-84 landed on his desk
Sooooo close

I was stationed on Nimitz many years ago and got to put my hand on one of these tomcats involved in the 1981 incident. There was even a cool MIG painted on the fuselage for the kill.

Two observations
1. Pilots are really good at communicating. Anytime I’ve seen these types of videos you have a play by play (albeit in pilot jargon) that’s really easy to follow exactly what’s happening. People could learn a lot from this.
2. The RIO telling the pilot to shoot the Sidewinder with the monotone response “I don’t have a fricking tone” made me
. Especially the second time when he said it and then you hear the squawking of the IR seeker come on. Cool as ice.

one of those Tomcat drivers was a former kicker from the Naval academy I believe, kicked a winning fg against Army his senior year, iirc, been a long time though

It does get you ready for an airline career though. Especially if you’re based in the NE during winter. Holding patterns galore

That had to be a frick up, right? Tensions are high, they're in the Strait of Hormuz with limited manuvering room, Bandas Abbar (was that the name of the place?) is only 12 or 15 miles away and you know the Iranians have anti-ship missiles. A flight coming in your general direction doesn't answer on the radio and the flight path is misconstrued as an attack profile. Next thing you know ... Missile away and you've splashed an Airbus. Whoops!
If it was intentional, WTF kind of message were we trying to send?

From what I remember about THAT encounter the Iranian Airbus had turned off it's IFF transponder.
I personally believe it was intentional....., to check the US response in hopes of a future suicide mission against our Navy or as some jihadi thing to cause the shoot down to make the U.S. look bad.
Farfetched???? Maybe....but nothing would surprise me with what was going on in the Middle East in that time period....especially with Iran.

The initial reporting in the US media placed the blame largely on the Iranians. Allegedly, the aircraft took off and ascended to a relatively low altitude (I don't remember the height, but maybe 1,000 or 1,500'), steered towards the fleet and then began descending towards the deck. This behaviour mimiced an Exocet missile attack profile. The Iranians had some older F-4s from back when the Shah was running the show. As you mentioned, I remember hearing there was no transponder pinging either. It all looked like they were trying to draw us into an attack.
I'm not 100% positive, but I think once the final Navy report was completed, most, if not all, of the initial reports were proven to be false. It was just aan airliner taking off and heading to Dubai.
It was 35 or 40 years ago. My memory may be faulty. Choupique was in the neighborhood at the time with the Navy. He probably has a MUCH better memory of the incident than I do.

Pretty good Navy resume. Beat Army, and killed a MiG.

We transited the Strait of Hormuz on July 4th a few months later, and let's just say we were on high alert. Once in the PG, we (intentionally?) sailed along Iran's coastline roughly one mile outside of the range of their missiles (Silkworm?). It has been a day or two ago, but lets just say that there was still quite a bit if tension there at the time.
Oh yeah...frick the Persian Gulf (especially in the summer).
