Has anyone ever done it? What was your experience like? Is it accurate?

Be careful and read the small print to verify they don't sell your DNA profile data. Many of these companies do this and reap huge profits from this.

I used identigene 3 years ago. Easy and reliable. Wasn't mine!

Do they anonymize it or keep your identity attached?

I've thought about it...but why would allow a company to have my DNA profile on file somewhere where someone can get it without a warrant.

Yeah I know:

Definitely worthwhile to me. We tend to build heroic narratives for our family histories that go back four or five generations at most rather than the long 40,000 year truth. It's good to see the truth. It gives you a LOT of really interesting details. And they update it regularly with all kinds of cool things that apply to you. You can opt in or opt out of research and be anonymous or be connected to new-found relatives.I found out I was a lot more Irish and Scandinavian than I knew. And a lot less German.I found out I carry a relatively obscure "Thomas Jefferson" gene. I found out I'm highly neanderthal by comparison. I found out I don't carry genetic markers for all the really scary diseases and syndromes. I found out I was 0.1% Japanese and 0.1% sub-Saharan African. That was all cool. I also found out I had a cousin that is a Gump. That was a shock. On second thought...

One of our clients is a 23 and me competitor. I speak with geneticists frequently, basically it's the future. With that being said, right now it's really early and we only understand roughly 3% of the genomic data. I believe 23 and me got into some issues due to being unable to produce reliable results.

The founder of 23 and me is/was married to a Google cofounder, their business model is to offer cheap genetic testing to help offset genomic research costs. They realize that the true value is in collecting the data and aren't worried about turning a profit right now. I imagine they do the best they can and worthwhile for some people, however it's still very noisy data and hard to draw reliable conclusions.

23andMe The first step in the process to finding out about whether you have these genes is a relatively inexpensive $99 2 3andMe test. 23andMe is a company that will test for common gene polymorphisms, which are variations in the DNA sequence of genes that can alter the function of that gene in a good way or a bad way. 23andMe no longer have health reports; however, they do provide the raw data, and that's still very useful.

Promethease The second step is cheap tool called p romethease, costing only $5. Promethease will match your raw data with a very large database, called SNPedia, which consists of over 57,000 published gene polymorphisms. Next, it generates a report with information about a person's attributes, such as propensity to diseases, based on the presence of specific SNPs within their genome. You will receive an email about 20 minutes later allowing you to view the results. You can arrange the results by magnitude and look at good and bad disease risks.

Fair enough.

Your last few responses to my posts have been kinda negative. Is there something that we disagree on that makes us not cool? I think you're a funny poster, not sure where the animosity is coming from. Unless it's just for comedy, and then we'll done.

Sometimes I try to give a fire for certain posters when the board is slow. People get upset by your posts so easy target. Just having fun.

Except your comments in that hot arse diver thread
