Not sure about the worst, but the best period was the one a few days after my then girlfriend told me she thought she was pregnant.

My dad (RIP) used to say the 1962-1972 period was pretty crappy (I was a kid but remember a lot of it). It was more of a drip drip thing than a lot of things at once. 1968 was pretty bad.
Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis (1961-1962)
JFK Assassinated (1963)
LBJ became president ("The Great Society"/welfare)
US sends troops to Vietnam (1965)
Hurricane Betsy (1965)
Watts Riots (1965)
Black Panther Movement started (1966)
Hippy movement started with Summer of Love (1967)
Tet Offensive (1968)
RFK Assassinated (1968)
MLK Assassinated (1968)
Protest/riots at DNC (1968)
Hurricane Camille (1969)
Stonewall Riots (1969)
Manson Murders (1969)
Woodstock (1969)
And the fun continued in the early 70's (Kent State, Baton Rouge riots, etc). I remember the January 1972 Baton Rouge riot/stand-off pretty well. Will never forget WBRZ Bob Johnson getting the shite beat out of him and he ended up a vegetable. Four people killed and 31 injured. Gov. McKeithen ordered 700 National Guardsmen into the city to help enforce a dusk-to-dawn curfew.
All of the above would have been much worse had we had 24 hour news and Facebook.

2020 is mostly inconvenient. For true crappiness:
542 - Two Icelandic volcano eruptions have dimmed the sun, causing cooling and crop failures and starvation. And there was a plague spreading around the Mediterranean killing half the population in places.
1350 - The Bubonic Plague ran from 1347 to 1352 so the year depends on location for the crappiest.
1918 - WWI AND Spanish Flu. The worlds economies were a shambles from the war, and then the Spanish Flu shows up and kills far more people than the war.
1942 - The peak of the Axis expansion - the world looked pretty bleak.
2020 - A minor blip.
