That’s the date they recommend when you don’t know the birthday of someone in your house.
I’ve got so many kids that sometimes I get their birthdays jumbled up, so “idk” is probably the more accurate.

I mean, I would have thought so too until I got a letter from the census bureau addressed to “resident”. I have owned this house for 6 years.
One of three things is true. They can either access the info, and in that case, don’t need it from me. Or, they don’t have it and need to explain to me why they need it, Or, they’re too incompetent/lazy to get it.
In any event, seems pointless to provide that info.

just curious, but if you don't think those are appropriate questions for a census, what should they be asking?

At the top of the letter, they say that they need household information for the purpose of Infrastructure planning, public services and congressional districting.
I’m not sure how knowing my 5 year olds name, birthdate and whether she is of Jamaican, Romanian, or Pacific Island decent helps them do any of that.

Because its the government and the generically addressed every single one of these letters
Since it's illegal to open other people's mail, they dont want to mail things to apartments and rentals with an old name and not have it opened.
I'm just pointing out you answering it or not doesn't change anything about your data being out there

People keep saying “out there”, like there’s some kind of data lake that holds information about everyone and that is accessible by everyone who works for every level of gubment.
Just because the NSA can identify everyone in your house doesn’t mean some college kid making $10/hr part time for the census bureau can too.
You should still take steps to limit where and who can get to your data. You’ll obviously never have 100% privacy and control but you still need to make sure it’s not a free for all with your personal info.

If one of ya'll gets the long form please fill it out. I know it is painstaking and arduous, but the information is put to good use. Namely to help planners and economists better figure out how to provide goods services and funding to certain locations. In my particular profession we used it to figure out the best route for a new regional transit route.
Census is super important as well. Determines Federal funding. In my particular profession Fed dollars are defined by an Urbanized area...

I don't think so. The long form is about 5 or 6 pages if I remember right. I think it is still mailed. It would be called something like or titled the American Community Survey (ACS). We specifically use the data in clumps. Recently, the Census Transportation Planning Products (CTPP) piece. Right now it is still 2012-2016.
They would've asked all kind of questions, like how many vehicles you have, do you work in the same parish you live, are you a transit rider etc....
