No, the truly compassionate thing to do is to give them the information and allow them to make an informed decision, to respect that decision and carry it out even if you disagree with that decision.

Mental health has really only made it this far?
People who are mentally ill can still make competent informed decisions. Not all people who are mentally ill are psychotic or incompetent.

Only if the Dutch government deems it so.

Who said it was? I know I didn't. And from what I'm reading, people are not arguing this one bit. They're arguing whether or not the state should be involved and facilitate. Anyone and everyone is entitled to commit suicide. Has anyone actually argued she can't commit suicide? Maybe so, I've been in and out while working.
All the state did was pass a law saying it's not a crime.

I hope it's legal by the time I get elderly. I'm going to take some of this and then jump out of a plane without a chute. Really live out my final moments.

No, they didn't. The patient chose to kill herself after years of sexual abuse and then 15 years of unsuccessful treatment,
She didn't kill herself, though. Didn't doctors euthanize her? So she decided to have someone else kill her. At least that's how I read it. Someone else was involved in whether or not to deem her condition unbearable. Otherwise, they couldn't have euthanized her.
My point is, she could have killed herself anytime she wanted without having to go through any of this.

You just jumped over the entire 'jump to conclusions' mat. All of it.
Physician assisted suicide is already legal in several US states. And I support it.
But, what power is the government being given? None, really. There are no death panels. They aren't making the decisions or administering the lethal doses. All the Netherlands is doing is giving more power to patients and parents to do what they feel is right for the long-term happiness of themselves or someone for whom they are a legal guardian.
If I had a kid right now that had some incurable terrible disease that I knew was never going to survive into adulthood and was going to suffer the entire time, I would choose to euthanize. At least I think I would, obviously I can't say 100% without being in those shoes.

And yes, I realize this is going on in Europe and not the U.S.

But after reading this thread, it seems, there is plenty of support for such a power being given to our own government here.

I can see both sides.
As can I, I just side more with let the person do what they want, and feel assisted suicide has more dignity and will allow for more closure for family than a traditional suicide (I know many others will say there is no dignity in it no matter what).

My only point was that it does worry me when people start deciding what is "unbearable" for others
This is valid, but you have to have 3 people agree (2 being licensed medical professionals), so that makes me feel a little better about it.

I don't know for sure, but in one of the links Darth posted earlier the doctors gave a patient that wanted to kill themselves a drink that would do it painlessly, and in some cases they have given the patients lethal injections to give themselves. From what I have read today most patients have to do it themselves unless they are physically incapable.

Wow. God help us if your way of thinking is our future.

"Spent all morning burying the cat."
"All morning to bury a cat?!"
"Yeah, it wouldn't keep still..."
"Oh, was it ill?"
"No, we just didn't like it."

If it helps you wrap your head around it any, I don't believe in God.

I understand now. I should have read it in more detail. The state's not actually involved, they just have a law that will not prosecute private doctors that do so.
It still concerns me that the there is someone out there determining what is unbearable, and how that's defined. But I know that happens in many other aspects of the law. And I'm more understanding on the adult making a decision to end her life with assistance. But not nearly as comfortable as anyone making that decision on behalf of children, or handicapped people, that aren't capable of making it.

That's OK. He believes in you.

Guess it's a good thing that little boy with the horrible skin condition (that puts him in constant pain....yet he's shown more of an appreciation for his life and bravery than many) is glad he didn't have a parent like you that decided to choose to kill him, I'm sorry...euthanize him, cause of his "suffering."
Google the butterfly boy, that's the child I'm talking about.

Like I said, I can't say 100% what I would do in that situation. It's also not entirely up to me, nor is it entirely up to the parents in the Netherlands.
ETA: And he obviously has a condition that is survivable into adulthood, which isn't what I said.

Agreed, although I'm not sure which side I fall on. But I'll be honest, my primary issue involves my religious values, and it's strictly a personal belief. But even so, I believe outside of religion, society have some types of obligations to protect those that can't protect themselves. And mentally disturbed people can fall into that. But I can definitely see your point and struggle with mine.

Me too. But I don't feel that way so much involving children or handicapped.

I have no problem with this.
In her decision, was anybody harmed? If people chose not to continue life, why not let them be?
Messed up in the fact about the sex abuse, and I'm hoping the guy is in prison, but if she wanted to end her life, that is on her.
This all damn day.
I regret that I have but 1 upvote to give.
