Sadly many here can't see this. Now I see why socialism is so popular with this younger generation. They've been indoctrinated all their lives to the point they've become statists and they don't even realize it.

Wrong. There is a huge difference in refusing treatment/having a DNR order and having a doctor kill you because you are clinically depressed/have PTSD

It is a leap at all to see how this might not be the patient's wish. Not necisarily in this case, but it is the opening to widespread euthenasia when we are no longer useful or productive.

Uh... you people do realize that it's independent doctors and consultants evaluating patients and carrying out these people's decisions, and not the Dutch government, right? Sure, they created the law, but it isn't government officials out there making the decisions at the patient's bedside.

Interesting because the desire to harm oneself is ofter a reason for a person to be involuntarily placed in a mental institution and give treatment even if they say they do not want it, i.e. incompetent.

It said she also suffered severe anorexia, had hallucinations, and was bedridden...she didn't just have PTSD. She was a 20+ year old adult, it's not our place to tell her whether she has to live or die.

That's different than the down syndrome thing...that was when Darth brought up killing babies legally because they were suffering from an unbearable disease.

Once that person is committed, whether involuntarily or voluntarily, an evaluation is done to determine if that desire is credible. If credible, treatment can be begun. However, no one can be made to participate in treatment. You can be forcibly locked up, but you cannot be forced to participate in your treatment regardless of your state of mind.

It's asinine comments like this that allow for people to continue to ridicule those who are truly mentally ill. This type of mocking and joking actually dissuades people from seeking help. These comments only feign compassion.

I'm sure they would make the person go through multiple medications, counseling, etc. prior to injection. This poor girl suffered for 15 years.

No, they didn't. The patient chose to kill herself after years of sexual abuse and then 15 years of unsuccessful treatment, all they (being doctors, not the government) did was rule her competent to make that decision on her own.

You miss the whole point. Let me go back in time a bit. Ever heard of such a thing as the Declaration of Independence? This document is the cornerstone of what until recently has been our thinking when it comes to government. This document starts with these words....

Do you understand what this statement means? It means that there are rights every person has that come from not government but God. And the fact that there rights come from God and not government means these right cannot be taken away by government. Now among those rights is the word "Life". This means that a person's right to live comes not from government but God. The only way you can give up that right to life to the government is if you violate a law this government deems worthy of death. Short of that, government cannot take this right from you.

So why is this important? Well, if the right to life came from government and not God, that means the government who gave you that right can also take it away. What's going on in Europe is these governments taking on the power of life and death outside of criminal law. This is the government saying, we can pass laws that allow for the killing of people who have not committed any crime. Once a government has this power, it can pass any law governing the right to life and death for any reason it sees fit. This gives that government the power of life and death not just over criminals under their authority, but all people living under their authority.

And yes, I realize this is going on in Europe and not the U.S. But after reading this thread, it seems, there is plenty of support for such a power being given to our own government here. It really saddens and worries me for the future of our republic that so many now are willing to just throw away what from the inception of this great country had been one of our most fundamental rights. The cancer of progressivism has just about reached terminal levels.

Who said it was? I know I didn't. And from what I'm reading, people are not arguing this one bit. They're arguing whether or not the state should be involved and facilitate. Anyone and everyone is entitled to commit suicide. Has anyone actually argued she can't commit suicide? Maybe so, I've been in and out while working.

It's a difficult deal. I can see both sides. My only point was that it does worry me when people start deciding what is "unbearable" for others, and those others have no say so. It makes me nervous to think that a society would speak for those that can't really speak for themselves.

But I agree with you, I don't think the government is killing babies for shits and giggles.

They could have easily said that she wasn't mentally capable of making that decision on her own.

None of us posting on TD really know if she was or not, but multiple doctors agreed that she was.

It can easily be seen as a catch-22, really, but that's not the current point of discussion.
