So what did they say happened with it?
They couldn’t tell. So much glass has fallen out that there’s no way to know now. He confirmed no dead bird in garden. That’s about it.

Or
Ernest T. Bass was one hell of a terror when it came to window busting with rocks. He got the most out of his only 5 appearances on the old "Andy Griffith Show" as Bass.

Your son and his friends had nothing to do with it.

There was a single point of break that then spread, it just happened very very quickly. It's instantaneous to the naked eye. Once the tension is broken, the whole piece goes. Your break happened right in the middle. You can see the pattern radiating out from it.
Your $4600 price for replacement (assuming 50% deposit for both lites of glass you are talking about) is not unreasonable. No one likes doing replacements like that, especially the radius window, so they're priced accordingly.

Does your wife’s ex-boyfriend know where you live?

We had this happen to a large frosted bathroom window we have. Around 3 AM we heard a loud pop and the glass spider-webbed entirely. No glass fell, but the replacement glass company told us that often the glass can have blemishes that over time compromise the double pained windows.
The pop was so loud that I was convinced someone shot it. Nope.

There is exactly one company in Louisiana qualified to fabricate a window that size that won’t break again:
Dependable Glassworks in Covington. The only way that will work is to go with a commercial window. Residential glass is 11/32 of an inch thick. You need minimum two sheets of 1/4”. Like another poster said, buildings settle and foundations shift. That’s why really old buildings with intact large windows (Louisiana old state Capitol) are all Diamond shaped panes.

The wood framing around the glass moving due to it being hot and dry?
More likely the whole house flexing because the soil is drying out more than normal, in certain soil conditions this is common every year.
