Damn crows. I wouldn’t put it past them. Maybe they threw the whole chicken this time.

We have a guy coming out tomorrow to measure and order. He said it will take 2 weeks for it to come in. We are just replacing the entire window so the seal is new and we don’t lose the insulation. $1300. Ugh

Thanks for all the help. Hoping the repair guy can tell me what caused this break.

One thing I’ve learned about window guys.

If they have to come out for just one window, they’re gonna make you pay

That happened to my sister last summer - it just shattered but it stayed in the frame. There was no bullet hole or bird - or actually anything to indicate it was hit by something. Window man said it happens

Yeah. I knew it wasn’t going to be cheap and we want it replaced correctly. It’s been an expensive repair year for us but at least it wasn’t my fault this time

You’ll need to replace that window - it’s broke to Hell.

Hey BottomlandBrew….. thoughts?

It's almost impossible to tell without lab equipment. Any inclusion, nickle sulfide or other, that is visible to the naked eye will not typically survive the tempering process, and thus will not make it to the consumer, especially in thinner glass typically found on residential insulating units.

Even the most advanced glass fabricators do not scan sheets of glass for inclusions. The more typical way of detecting inclusions is to heat soak the glass after tempering. That involves putting the tempered glass in a large oven and heating it to 500-600 degrees for a bit. Most inclusions will cause the tempered glass to fail at these temperatures and thus it will not be used to make the insulating unit. You rarely see heat-soaked glass on residential insulating units. It's more typical of high-rise construction where falling glass poses a danger or the cost benefit of replacing the glass is less than the cost of heat-soaking the glass. Replacing large units on tall buildings is expensive. Heat soaking adds a few dollars per square foot, but can potentially save you money down the road.

You can somewhat determine if the failure is caused by impact if the glass is still all in place. You'll see a tiny little nick where the break radiates.

And OP, you do not have "tinted glass," but you for sure have low-e glass. You can easily tell by the color difference where the outside lite is missing.

Yes. Even the cheap double pane windows will have at least nitrogen in them. There may be some super cheap windows just flushed with dry air. If they just left the ambient air in them they would fog like crazy.

Most are just filled with ambient air. How does this not fog up? The metal spacer band around the unit is filled with desiccant beads that soak up any moisture in the air left in the unit after it is sealed. If your seal fails, more air will be let in and the desiccant can longer soak up any more moisture, thus causing it to fog up.

This is one reason why bigger units have to be thicker. You have to put a thicker spacer in the unit to be able to hold enough desiccant to soak up the residual moisture.

You can fill units with argon, and a lot of residential window companies will try and up sell it, but it's not generally necessary. The cost usually doesn't justify the energy savings of argon.

I was more thinking hat it’s been over 100° for a month with no rain. 108° today.

If it is south facing it had the sun pounding on it. Combined with a 108 degree day it could have been very hot. It still should not shatter, but if it had a flaw in the glass I guess it’s possible.

Perhaps the extreme heat from radiation caused the glass to expand and bind in the frame. Then either it just burst on its own, or there was a bird strike that initiated it. I get bird strikes all the time on my windows and most of the time the bird flies away.

I can't believe we've gone 5 pages and no one has suggested you put Flex Seal on it.

Thanks. Yes, the window did have low-e glass.

I don’t think it shattered from an impact bc the entire window immediately broke into tiny pieces almost evenly. There wasn’t a single point of break that then spread.
