I think it was that efficiency coupled with the total lack of morality that it required on their part to do it that shocked the world so much. Also, the Germans were considered a civilized and intelligent people. Up to that point slaughter on this scale was the calling card of ancient empires (Like the Mongols) or Asians(like the Turks for example). On top of all this, the full scale of their depravity was publicized for all the world to see. I think all these factors came together to shock the world in a way that nothing before or after has.

My child? I have two. My son is 12 and going into 7th grade and my daughter is 6 and going into 1st grade.

Kids are already exposed to so much more than their parents realize. It's called the internet. Better to have a responsible, educated, and trained adult explain the horrors of the world with some context than her friends and random shite she sees online. Lighten up on the teachers. It's not like her teacher spent days trying to figure out how to train a generation of teenage serial killers using the Holocaust.
