I might take off a few days and go to Paris.
Might go through Dallas on the way back

Think some of those buildings were built for the 1889 Worlds fair or the1900 Paris Exposition. Probably more for show

Paris wasn't heavily bombed in WWII

Attacks that did happen were focused on industrial targets.

This notion will come up as we move through this journey.

It’s wasn't wars. The major trench warfare fighting in WWI took place far away from Paris, and the city was largely spared during WWII.

France surrendered before Germany reached Paris, and it wasn’t carpet bombed by the Allies like a lot of other occupied cities.

I like the greenery more so than the old buildings. The globe by the Eiffel Tower was cool though, wonder what happened.

Toward the end of WWII Hitler ordered a scorched earth decree which would've wiped out Paris. Thankfully his generals had enough decency to ignore the order.

that was actually my guess. I knew there was one in '89 but couldn't recall if there had been one in 1900 or not.

World's fairs and temporary cities fascinate me. I suppose interest in Chicago 93 will shoot up when/if the film version of White City is ever made

That was a temporary exhibit for the World's fair

The "globe" still exists in NYC from their fair

This is true, but I was thinking more along the lines of occupied forces destroying them in some fashion or building over them. Then when the French came out of hiding they cleaned up the mess and left open areas?

Most historians consider this claim to be false. There is no evidence Hitler gave such an order. The last Nazi general in charge of Paris claimed after the war he saved the city.

However, he is the only person to make this claim, and he most likely did so to mitigate his role in war crimes committed in the occupied city while he was in charge.

Aren't those two towers in the background the ones used in the original MIB?

Correct! And local lore says one of those towers is still a functioning rocket!

I honestly had no idea the Eiffel Tower was that old. Anyone know when was it built and/or its original purpose.

leader said don't do scorched earth, but the order was ignored and Alexandria was scorched.
