Loved them as a kid... My B-I-L and his brother spend about 8K on fireworks for NYE. We just go to their house to watch them...

Had a black cat go off in my hand when I was 7 or 8. Left a little scorch mark, and my ears rang for what seemed like an hour. Took 2 days for my hearing to return to normal.

Whatever that kid was launching was much much bigger than a whistlin’ willy.

Not necessarily, a typical firecracker can do that kind of damage if it goes off in a closed fist. It is all relative to how much pressure can be generated by the explosion.
