The first fatality from the storm in Lousiana was a 14-year-old girl who died when a tree fell on her home, according to the governor.

"We do expect that there could be more fatalities," Edward's Deputy Chief of Staff Christina Stephens tweeted. Stephens said the girl died in the town of Leesville, located in Vernon Parish.

Girl was in Leesville that was killed? Wow. Wonder if it was tornado or the northern eye wall wind.

Not making fun of a 14 girl dying... God rest her soul.

But sometimes it's really strange how people die...

That saying about "when your number is up, it's up" sometimes comes to fruition.

This is what worries me most in storms. We do not have any trees around our house that can land on it. It’s one less thing to worry about. Poor family

Nearly happened to a friend of mine during Hurricane Frederick in 1979. Huge pine tree fell on house. Two large limbs popped through roof/ceiling. They impaled the sofa where he was sleeping, but barely missed him. One limb went all the way through to the floor.

I don’t understand why people have trees within falling range of their house.

Yeah i just had some trees cut near my home for fear of this happening to me or my family. It's more for peace of mind. I bet the family especially the father may have to live with that guilt for a long long time. I guess when your time is up it doesnt matter what you do to prevent. RIP little girl.

Sometimes they can’t afford to get them cut down.

Unfortunately more common than people would believe. There were 5 or 6 fatalities from trees still falling in the days AFTER Katrina, including a sheriff's deputy just driving down a rural road.

I’m surprised that insurance companies don’t assist in the cost of cutting trees down, could save them a lot more money down the road. Obviously there should be limits such as age of tree, condition of tree, distance from house, etc.
