CULLEN, La. (Associated Press) - Louisiana State Police say an 11-year-old has died after the speeding pickup truck he was driving hit a tree.

Trooper Glenn Younger says in a news release that Clark James Davis was the only person in the 1993 Ford Ranger when it went off Louisiana Highway 802 about 4:15 a.m. Saturday in Webster Parish.

The release says the boy was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the truck. It did not say why the boy was driving alone at night.

Younger says the boy was from Webster Parish but did not give his home town. The crash occurred about 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of the Arkansas state line.

He says investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash.

How tall was he? Could he reach the peddles. Some will argue 11 yrs old is too young to drive.

You don’t get thrown from a car when you hit a tree going 20 mph

We should make it illegal for 11-year-olds to drive so this won't happen

That’s one arguement, especially at 4 in the morning.

I would make that argument at any time of day.

I have an uncle (he is in his late 70s). While back he told me a story about how he use to deliver papers. And for the first year he did it on his back, but when he was about 10 or 11 his dad would just let him use his pickup truck.

Obviously it is too young, you can't have a bunch of 11, 12.....year olds on the streets, but it's not impossible for kids at that age to drive.

Some on this board might say it was the trees fault.

How about the fact that an eleven year old child was driving?

My dad used to let me drive to my grandparent's house and to the store when I was 13 or so. We lived in a somewhat rural area.

Are we instituting common-sense car reform after this tragedy?
After all, if we can't trust car owners to secure their lethal property from their own children can we trust them to secure said lethal property from those who would hurt us?
