It means easily negotiable - if I have cash (which is fungible) - I can easily trade that for food, medical care, pharmaceutical products, ammunition, fuel, firewood, consumer electronics, sexual favors, disinfectant, musical instruments, what have you - in an open and functioning marketplace.
If I have an $80,000 car, I have $80,000 (plus, probably at least a little interest) in cash and debt tied up in a depreciating asset - the equivalent of taking cash money and lighting it on fire to heat your home, rather than paying the light bill with it.
Am I getting through to you at all?
Money is for spending. You can't take it with you. I have plenty years ahead to stockpile cash for old age. I've always enjoyed life, and motorsports are one of my pleasures. I enjoy a nice car that is fun to drive. Driving isn't simply a means to get from one place to another - for me it's a pleasurable experience in a fast, well handling car.Amassing cash has never been one of my priorities.

so that's really not an absurd number.
It is absurd to contemplate spending ~70% of gross income on automobiles, as that term is used widely.
If it was a commercial truck that he used to make a living, it would be pushing it - but for mere transportation - 28% give or take should be the MAXIMUM.
My god man - do you know how much HOUSE you can buy for $2k per month? An (if you do it right) appreciating asset, the interest on which is tax deductible.

So you aren't divorced? And you aren't retired?
You, sir, are a liar.

Would that not be net?

That's great for you. It's not a fact.

Who says he needs or wants more house?

Yes, I do know because my house note is over $2K.

150k after taxes is solid. Over 200k salary is fine for two cars totally 100k. Some of yall need to relax. The only thing I find stupid is giving a 16 year old a very fast, tiny car. To me, they need to earn it. Safe vehicle for two years, and then surprise them at 18, and to me that's still a little early but oh well.

True - I don't believe in hoarding money for money's sake.

You can't take it with you.
Also true, but you will likely not outlive your wife and child - leaving them something should be at least a secondary goal in financial solvency.

Not the way you're spending money. You're not in great shape (not terrible, but not great) as it is - this is a big step backwards.

Also true, particularly as you get older, a quality car can improve your state of mind and general feeling of well-being.
quote:
it's a pleasurable experience in a fast, well handling car.
And that doesn't cost $100k. It doesn't even cost $50k. You are choosing, IMHO, foolishly, to squander resources that are, in your mind, infinite and endless (because you do not personally work for them.)

Amassing cash has never been one of my priorities.
Well - I would make it one, if you desire to squander cash on such trifles for the foreseeable future.

After all bills and expenses, including house and car notes, I still have around $6-7K/mo. in expendable income.
So how does this happen?

He has said that he is divorced. He has said that he has retired. I'll bet you $100 you respond to this. You are incapable of not getting the last word.

My wife will be a millionaire when I die. I have very good life insurance. No worries there. My youngest kid has 3 years left at home before he moves on to college. Pretty much everything I do revolves around him and his karate tournaments. I will continue to enjoy life and let him enjoy his. Thus, a nice vehicle for the extensive traveling we do, and nice car for him to take to school and for me to do an occasional track day in. Once he's out of the house, my expenses will decrease significantly. There are many years ahead with a lot more expendable income that I can save for my "golden years."
