After a bird strike at 3000 feet after takeoff from New York's LaGuardia airport the aircraft loses power in both engines. Pilots Sullenburger and Skiles make the decision to ditch the aircraft in the Hudson River. Their professional training, calmness under duress, and decision making save the lives of all on board and possibly others on the ground.

The aircraft is on display at the Carolina Aviation Museum in Charlotte, flight 1549's scheduled destination that day.

I have listened to the flight recording when it was posted here before. It is crazy how calm everyone involved remained throughout that whole thing.

Can someone explain like I'm 5 why the plane didn't sink in the Hudson?

Jet fuel is lighter and more buoyant than water. Also, the A320 has a setting for ditching in water that seals certain openings.

Most of the passengers on board were on their way to a clown convention and their luggage was full of balloon animals.

The forces at work in buoyancy. The object floats at rest because the upward force of buoyancy is equal to the downward force of gravity.
In physics, buoyancy (/'b??.?nsi, 'bu?j?n-/)[1][2] or upthrust, is an upward force exerted by a fluid that opposes the weight of an immersed object

Jet fuel in water can’t melt steel beams.

And to think I live in Charlotte and was in Charlotte that very day.

They didn’t even activate the “ditch switch”. Which is even more amazing. Too busy trying to restart the engines.

I was thinking about this yesterday, and remembered previously listening to the recording.

I'm surprised that there wasn't more dialog between the pilots and ATC exactly what they were having to do.

Aviate, navigate, communicate. In that order.

If I remember the audio, he made a barely intelligible comment about being in the Hudson, was just thinking they might be more descriptive after that decision was made.

he told them that he couldn't make the pavement and they were going into the Hudson, I guess it was such an incredible statement to the controllers that it completely flew by them, didn't respond
