Is this that DE the Saints had a few years back? I wonder what Courtney Roby is eating?

My beef with him is we paid him good money and he hasn't taken care of himself, which is a big reason for him "falling off."

bullshite. He probably peaked three years ago. It happens.

quote:

He wasn't going to be a true linebacker, but he was going to be doing more standing up and occasionally dropping back into coverage, and he comes into camp just as fat as he ever was.

You don't shed 40 pounds in 6 months in football. Don't care who you are.

Look, the rush LB wasn't going to work. Smith looked lost on the field. It is what it is.

Like I said, the best thing he can do to help the team is retire and take a front office position. He knows his playing days are likely done, definitely with the Saints.

How does this refute what I said?

I didn't except him to. I said before the season he needed to shed about 15-20 lbs, which would have put him in the 260's.

What is he going to do in the front office?

Being on the downswing of your career =/= not taking care of yourself. I just think we gave a big contract to a guy on the downside of his career.

Still big for a guy with limited mobility thats never played the position before. Thats tough to do when you've maintained a certain weight your entire career. He'd probably need to get to 240-250s to have any shot at gaining mobility. Gallettes < 260 and hes pretty big for an OLB.

Michael "Beerman" Lewis works in the front office as a Special Assistant to the team or something. Theres all kinds of titles they can give out.

Strawman.

I said he hasn't taken care of himself (he hasn't), and it's a big reason (not the sole reason) for his drop off in performance.

If Smith retires instead of getting cut, it saves us an additional $2.3m and change.

how? retirement counts the same as being released cap wise. They call it dead money cuz there is no getting around it- even if the player retires.

For kicks- 2013 Saints Dead Money for gone players

Dave Thomas $500,000
Martez Wilson $452,610
Chris Chamberlain $400,000
Johnny Patrick $272,690
Chris Carr $228,529
Chris Williams $222,588
Jay Richardson $130,588
Jim Leonhard $65,000
Jason Smith $65,000
Courtney Roby $65,000
Jumal Rolle $30,000
Saalim Hakim $30,000
Greg Romeus $24,912
Senio Kelemete $18,000

ooh.. I was on that plane too. but I didn't keep an eye on Smith... there was some talent in the rear seats.

And honestly, we sat on the plane for an extra 1 1/2 hours due to ice. If I felt like paying for an overpriced hockey puck between bread I would of... but I got a drink instead.

I thought if he retired before June 1st, the hit goes on the previous season.

The Deuce Mcallister diet. A 4 piece from popeyes and warsh it down with a XL pepsi. If this guy lives to be 50 I will be shocked.

Don't think there's any special provision for retirement. You can do the June 1 designation but just the same as any released player.

Wow. I just looked up Salary Cap. In the last 20 years, the salary cap has gone from $34m to $123m. Thats crazy.

but they owners have won a lot by flattening it out

Part of the Saints problems have been that in 2010-12 when so many players hit the stage where ya have to pay them, the cap went flat/down

First off, Chad Johnson ate McDonald's almost everyday while he played. Next, Smith most likely won't be back next year so who cares?

I eat much worse than that pretty often and I'm not fat. I also don't work out all that much. Maybe that'll come back to bite me when I get older.

I drink a frick load of water and try to avoid soft drinks and beer.
