The New Orleans Saints gave kicker Wil Lutz the largest contract in terms of total value on Wednesday when he signed a five-year, $20.25 million deal.
The new contract includes $9.2 million guaranteed, which ranks second among active kickers, behind only Baltimore’s Justin Tucker at $10.8 million.
Lutz’s average annual salary of $4.05 million ranks fifth among active kickers, though details from Jason Myers’ new deal with the Seahawks are not available yet. Myers was a Pro Bowler with the Jets last season.
Regardless, this is a monster deal for the 24-year-old Lutz, who made 87 percent of his field goals the past three years and had the most accurate full season ever by a Saints kicker.
Here are more details from Lutz’s new deal:
Signing bonus: $5.25 million
Total guarantees: $9.2 million
2019
Base salary: $850,000 (guaranteed)
2020
Base salary: $3.1 million (guaranteed)
Workout bonus: $50,000
2021
Base salary: $3.4 million
Roster bonus: $200,000

100% fine with that. Pay the man. I'm so thankful for Big Nutz Lutz.

I had my doubts about when he first started, but he's turned into a solid kicker in the league.
Those are hard to find and it's been a revolving door before he got here.

Well deserved. What a nightmare it was trying to find a decent kicker after Hartley lost his groove.

Having basically automatic points any time you cross the other team's 40 is so underappreciated at times. Glad we locked this fella down.

Here comes 5 years of Chad985Boi and a "Lutz is overpaid" schtick

This board will turn on him if he misses more than three field goals next year and start saying he's overpaid

You haven't been paying attention to my arguments. Part of my argument was that a FG kicker is so much more important than a 2 yard punter difference.

All that money. He better not miss one goddamn field goal and extra point

Which is even a dumber point

No kicker is perfect all the time, but Lutz is as close to automatic as you are gonna find in this league and he's really young. This dude could be our kicker for the next 15-20 years. There's so many missed extra points and FGs these days. Finding a kicker like Lutz is really hard to do, so if you get one, you lock him up at a competitive salary. That's what we did.
Don't be ridiculous and act like he's making Brees money. It was only a few years ago that we had a nee kicker every few months. That was torture.

We wouldn’t have lost the NFC CG if it weren’t for them having the best kicker in the league.

If you keep getting top 5 production out of your punter and your place kicker, you keep paying them. That's a 15-20-year investment if you ask me.

You and me both.
I was thinking Harbaugh had fricked us when Lutz started and kept kicking those low arse kicks.
He turned out to be money though.
