You are incorrect. He is responsible.

Responsible for the club’s entire football operations, Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis enters his 11th season in his current position and 13th with the Saints. He is a veteran of over 25 years in the NFL and during his time in New Orleans has been honored with the most prestigious awards presented to a league executive. Yet the most satisfying achievement of Loomis’ career has come in helping mold a roster that has produced many of the franchise’s finest moments over the last six seasons, including the Super Bowl XLIV championship.

Loomis was promoted to General Manager in 2002 and earned the additional title of Executive Vice President later that year. The departments under his direction include coaching, player personnel and scouting, salary cap management, contract negotiations, athletic training, equipment, video and communications.

Maybe if you lay off the you'll grasp the basic fact that LOOMIS DOESN'T DRAFT THE TALENT, DUMBASS.

I just don't see the "love" for Loomis. I think he sucks.
Sure, he has found some diamonds in the rough like Graham, PT, Moore, Gallette, Hicks and some guys who have been serviceable: Dave Thomas, Grubbs, Robinson, Casillas, Mack

If you are giving credit to Loomis for scouting players (which is flawed logic), don't forget Carl Nicks, Drew Brees (FA), Colston, etc etc etc. You only mention serviceable players, not the absolute boons for this team's success over 6 years.

quote:

But for any one of those guys, I can give you just as many that he has absolutely bombed on, with special attention to the busts in the first few rounds.

(starting in 2002)Donte Stallworth/Charles Grant, Jon Sullivan, Will Smith, Jammal Brown, R. Bush, R. Meachem, S. Ellis, M. Jenkins, P. Robinson, Cam Jordan, Mark Ingram. Of those, the only ones I would consider 'bust' status is Sedrick Ellis. The others had some positive impact at some point for the Saints, or another team.

quote:

...not to mention the absolute bombs he picked/acquired before Payton's arrival.

So you are referring to the Haslett era? He was the defensive mind of this team, as well as the head coach. You do realize that most of his 1st round decisions were defensive players that did not pan out, how is that Loomis's fault? He manages the business aspect of the team, not talent evaluation. He's done well at keeping players around that we want, and sending the floaters down stream (in my opinion). The only consistent thing that can be said about our defense since Jim Mora, has been its inconstancy.

I have more than one department under my direction also, and I have enough sense to let the managers run them without a lot of interference. It's called using common sense.

Don't know how I missed that one, my fault. But still, 2 busts in 10 years in the 1st rounds? Not too bad. Sullivan surprised a lot of people, Ellis just didn't pan out, like the rest of the Gregg Williams picks appear to.

This, all of this. . He and SP turned an irrelevant team into one of the better franchises in the league today. I mean we have big time players saying they WANT to come here. Never happened before Loomis.

I don't know. The only reason I signed up to this site was so I could go on the rant and tell everyone how much I thought Miles sucks. Never got banned. I see your point though.

Over the past 10 years, that's exactly 9 starters (10 if you count Morestead) still on the team that he has drafted...that is not good.

Without the 2006 draft and Brees falling in his lap thanks to Saban, Loomis would have about 6 starters still left from his 10 years as GM.

Sorry to stir the love-fest

So are you just ignoring the part where people are telling you he is just the money guy? He doesn't make player personnel decisions.

Some gms are just numbers guys, so are just scouting guys, and some are both. Loomis is purely a numbers guy. He has never been a talent evaluator.

If you want to put blame on who we draft and pick up in FA, look to our scouting dept and coaches. They tell Loomis who they want and he makes the numbers work.

I believe what you are trying to say is our scouts and coaches do poorly at evaluating defenses talent.

Edit:
And yeah his title may say all that, but Payton is the one picking most of these guys. Maybe you can put a little blame on him for the scouts, but if Payton wants to keep them do you think Loomis should piss him off by firing them anyway?

They have a great relationship and it would be even worse to wreck it than just having a substandard defense imo.

.Here's Loomis' draft history since he's been GM since 2002 in order of round. Not impressed at all.
02 Ch.Grant Bentley
03 Stinchcomb
04 Smith
05 Brown
06 Harper Evans Colston
07 Bushrod
08 Nicks
09 Morestead
10 Graham

So what your saying is he averages one pro bowl caliber player per offseason. Add in FA pick ups like drew, shockey, vilma, sproles and lofton and that number increases.
Tl; dr version: you're an idiot.
