I never played football so I dont know the tactical advantages or disadvantages of a 3-4 or 4-3 for that matter. I know JDR has ties to this area and was a coach with the Saints at one point in time. I know Spags has ties to Jim Johnson who was supposedly a defensive genius until his death from melanoma in 2009. I know Mike Nolan is off the board at this point as well. Gregg Williams was supposed to be the defensive savior for us 3 years ago and yes he did help us win a super bowl with that turnover city defense but we still have never had a pass rush and we have a propensity for giving up way too many big plays. Its like our defense has always lacked discipline and technique. For you guys that are x and o experts out there which DC candidate makes sense for us? Can we create a pass rush with the players we have now purely based off scheme or are we lacking the talent?

Yes and No.

Jordan, Gallette, and Wilson are promising young pass rushers but we still need some more pieces to be a real good pass rushing team.

I think either Spags or Del Rio would be good hires, honestly.

The disadvantage to a 3-4 for us is switching our personnel over. We are set up to be a 4-3 team. Potentially Cam Jordan and Will Smith could be 3-4 ends and Franklin is a great 3-4 NT. But having Gallette and perhaps even Romeus convert to LB may pose some problems.

Easily Spags. I really want to see the Saints run that multiple DE front 4. Saints need a pass rush, and even with the Rams, Spags found guys like Long and Quinn who could get to the passer.

Long was drafted before Spags was in STL too

In fact the first 1st Rd selection under his tenure, OT Jason Smith, is such a bust there is rumor he might be cut this spring if he doesn't take a pay cut.

Singletary.

If he doesn't get the job, I'm done with this team.

After yesterday, it's no secret that I want Spags running the defense. Who wouldn't want to coach this def when you have an offense like the Saints do?

Yea - Spags would be an awesome pickup for the Saints. I'd fear the multiple DE looks with all 4 bigguns bullrushing for the QBs head.

Easy answer after Nolan is off the table.

But the more I think about it, the more I wouldn't mind giving Mike Singletary a chance at being defensive coordinator. I know he hasn't been one before, but a lot of guys were never a coordinator before they got their first coordinator job. And you have to admire what he did with the defense in San Fran. Also (and this would almost have to be a condition to hiring him) he could help us sign Erin Henderson from Minn who is a FA and a huge upgrade for us at OLB. Not my first choice, but I wouldn't mind it either.

ya'll listen to staug, he has seen JDR on a daily basis...

...like how we know the strengths and weaknesses of GW but they are only slobbering over him in STL now.

He was opposed to drafting Patrick Willis. He threw a tantrum to get them to draft Taylor Mays. He has admitted repeatedly he's "not an X's and O's guy", but a motivator. He has been criticized for not putting a lot of hours in in Minny. He's never been a DC, only a LB coach or HC.

Not no, but hell no.

the guy has literally done NOTHING since Mike Smith left. Stroud and Henderson anchoring the Dline made JDR look a lot better than what he actually is.

He is the quintessential definition of a dud. He doesn't say anything, show any emotion, or even seem like he's doing anything EVER...always just the same coach speak and empty promises to improve. His secondaries consistently get burned and he just stands there flexing and fixing his hair on the sideline. He and the front office of Jville have whiffed on pass rusher after pass rusher.

I literally see zero reasons why he would make a good defensive coordinator...other than he seems to be decent at recognizing DT talent. Why TD.com is so fascinated with this guy, I will never know. I can't tell you guys how many times I drove home hearing him on the radio and being so grateful that we had Sean Payton.

Spags. Don't really ilk Del Rio, especially since Payton gives so much control to the DC.

Nothing wrong with Greg W. defenses that some pass rushers would not cure.
