Todd McShay's Mock Draft 2.0

Can't put too much here because it's $$$ material, but here are a few choices of interest to Saints fans:

quote:
9. Cincinnati Bengals, 6-9-1
Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford
A freakishly gifted athlete, Thomas dominated all season (15 TFLs, eight sacks and seven QB hurries) and was a wrecking ball against North Carolina in the Sun Bowl. At 6-foot-3 and 273 pounds, he has good size and strength, and he's stout against the run. Cincinnati could use some more pass-rush help after having just 33 sacks in 2016.
11. New Orleans Saints, 7-9
Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan
Charlton really came on strong in the second half of the season, posting 10 sacks in his final 10 games. He showed a lot of improvement with his hands and overall technique in 2016. The Saints need a pass-rusher opposite Cameron Jordan, and Charlton has the size, speed and power to be a difference-maker off the edge.
13. Arizona Cardinals, 7-8-1
Reuben Foster, ILB, Alabama
If the right QB is available here, I wouldn't count the Cardinals out. With Watson and Trubisky off the board, though, Foster is the pick. He's one of the 10 best players in this draft; the only reason he might slide a bit is his position. He shed weight and played much faster in 2016, proving to be an every-down linebacker. The Cardinals have six defensive starters set to hit free agency. Whom they re-sign will play a big role in the direction they take with this pick.
21. Detroit Lions, 9-7
Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
Barnett isn't expected to put up big numbers during workouts, which could cause him to fall a bit in between now and late April. But he plays with good discipline, a consistent motor and impressive physicality. His production in the SEC the past three years is insane, including 52 TFLs and 33 sacks. The Lions have needs at every level of the defense, but pass-rusher tops the list.

This is doomsday situation for me. If the saints pass on Thomas, foster, and especially Barnett I'll gauge my eyes to shield loomis from me

I actually really like Taco, and although this jump seems high compared to what many expected, if he posts up some solid combine numbers he may be a good player to look at.

Hope that they do not pass on Foster and Barnett.

McShay obviously hates us.

Now it's a trend. Majority of national draft guys I've seen don't have Barnett as a top 15 prospect.

I've heard McShay on his pod with Kiper saying they don't expected Barnett to test out well.

My pick is Foster.
I think the Saints need to shore up the middle more than they need a pass rushing DE. They are both needs. I just think MLB is a bigger need.

Who do they have the Falcons picking?

All you have to do is watch tape on Barnett to see he's not what we NEED. Very little agility or twitch. Like a less athletic Will Smith. Takk or Taco would be better fits

I understand the athleticism concerns but typically people who can get to the quarterback a ton in college can get to the quarterback in the NFL.
Are there many examples of a major conference player who accrued a ton of sacks who couldn't rush the qb in the league ?

He plays faster than everyone else. He trusts his eyes and just reacts to what he sees. That shows on tape, he always looks like he's moving at a different speed. Reuben has been that way since high school, he isn't some hidden gem. He was a top 5 national recruit coming out because he played faster than everyone back then too. There isn't any hesitation in his game. It is seek and destroy with Reuben

The only slight pause I have with him is that he played behind probably the best dline in college football, maybe ever. That is not to say he isn't talented because he clearly is, but I also am not sure how talented.
I want to see him at the combine. I want to see how fast he and agile he is compared to his peers.

look, let's be honest here. While we could have used any of those LSU LB's like minter, ALexander, or Jones...maybe even sheppard to some extent and made us better, we definitely could have or could use those Bama LB's just as much like hightower, Mosely, McClain and now Foster.
I just want to have a dominant front 7. we have been weak at LB since vilma left. We need somebody to QB the defense. I wish we could get hightower in FA and draft Foster but I am guessing that would not work unless we ran a 3-4.

Don't expect a Patrick Willis type athlete. Foster looks faster than he is because he doesn't hesitate. When he recognizes what's going on, and he does that quicker than anyone in the draft, he just locks in and goes. Doesn't second guess himself, just pins his ears back and flies to the ball. I'd expect his 40 to be in the high 4.7 neighborhood
I think shoring up the linebacker corps should be the top priority for the saints
