That timeframe, whatever still existed post-Payton, is long gone. And, we decided to go with a coach who was a loser outside of his roles as DC.

I say we go with one of these young guns because a least we'll have something attractive here. The aging defensive stars are, well, getting old.

There is nothing here if our team isn't substantial.

I'm wearing my paper bag like a bitch, but there is nothing this team offers for top-tier talent. We need to take a big chance with this hire.

Just my 2 cents that are worth nothing.

frick the Saints and the love I have for them. Pelicans too...mother frickers

Only 32 of these jobs in the world.

You go out and find a top candidate. One who is hungry and determined. No exceptions.

Whoever they hire will still only be temporary. This is a minimum 3-year rebuild and nobody with a name wants to go through that especially with so many other openings. Expect a place-holder hire until they can clean out the books for a few years.

And, just like that, the Saints are interviewing The Joe Brady.

This is why we need to make colour rush our permanent unis and have a beautiful field. If you don't think this stuff matters to players you're crazy

The washington commanders were 4-13 last year. It takes one playmaker and leader. The Chiefs were barely a play off team before Mahomes and were 2-14 prior to Andy Reid. It only takes 1-2 people to turn a program around.

Drew brees was our playmaker that gave us over a decade of playoff and better football. He is gone and his coach is gone. Toughen the frick up.

I am so tired of this board hating and complaining. Yes we need change... we do every year. That's what great teams do is change every year.

We took a risk on Sean Payton (first time HC) and brees (shoulder in a sling). it's not impossible to find another playmaker and hungry/smart HC again. Are we going to get another SB anytime soon? Who knows! But I am not going to sit back and let most of this board complain and hate, like a bunch of weeping vaginas.

The saints will make it back to relevant FB. Because they are willing to pay for it and its owner wants to give the fans something they can be proud off in Louisiana.

The good thing about the nfl is you’re one hire and one QB away. There’s only 32 teams so every job is in demand.

The bad thing about the nfl is the timing and luck to pair up your franchise coach and QB is extremely difficult to get right.

We currently don’t have either one, but let’s hope the timing is in our favor.

The last time the Saints had a true coaching search (not just promoting from within) the situation was FAR more dire. Not only was the team bad (from a W/L perspective) but there was a ton of uncertainty about not only the state of the franchise, but the city in which it was located. It was almost literally a "rebuild". Not just in terms of the team, but the stadium and city. It was not a destination job, at all. In fact, the only reason Payton took the job was because he had no other option if he wanted to be a HC.

The situation today isn't great. But at least there is more stability than in 2005 (although some would argue that "stability", i.e. :Loomis, is a big part of the problem). Another thing working in the Saints favor is it doesn't appear there will be as many jobs open as most assumed there would be. That doesn't mean the Saints are the top job available. But it's better to be the worst of a group of (currently) 5 than last of a group of 10. Like others have said, the market only has 32 positions. That means even the worst job of 32 still has significant demand.

This doesn't look like a "win now" job. Far from it. So perhaps the approach is to give it to a 1st time HC (like they did in 2005) with at least some assurance the FO will give him 3 years to work with. The HC is not going to be able to fix the personnel issues overnight. So maybe the sell is acceptance of where the franchise is right now and the offer of patience to a new HC as opposed to the other teams where the owners expect to win now.
