I'm not one to throw CSP (or for that matter, Loomis) under the bus all the time.
But this is a problem that has persisted for years. Years and years,

CSP has his buddies at positional coaching jobs, and he refuses to fire them.
Joe Vitt, Bill Johnson, Greg McMahon.
There may be others.

These guys have been turning out shite for years.
When's the last time our ST has been even average?
When have we last developed a linebacker worth a shite?
Why do our DL players seem to regress?

Of all the problems I have with CSP, this is the most infuriating to me.
Stop this cronyism bullshite and hire some respectable position coaches.
Your drafting wouldn't look so shitty if you could actually develop players instead of making them worse.

I've never melted.
Not even when LSU was shut out by Bama in the BCS, the Saints lost to the 49ers in the playoffs, and a family member all died in the same week.

This is something I've thought for years.
I was hoping it wasn't true, but it absolutely is.
It's killing us.

Payton's staff have too much dirt on him so he is scared to fire them.

Yeah, that's possible.
Maybe something to do with painkillers.

But there's no point in speculating.

All I know is that it's hurting us badly.

I like Allen a lot, but the rest of the defensive staff is terrible.

I wouldn't doubt this about Vitt, Johnson and McMahon I have no idea.

McMahon to me has been the worst. Our ST have been a circus (outside of punting) virtually every year.

I like Allen, too.
And I think his effect is showing (outside of Browner, oddly).

But even if he takes over for Ryan, he'll be stuck with Johnson and Vitt.

I do not like Loomis. He has to go.

Payton I feel can rise back to the top, but not with his current staff. I do not want Payton gone.

I'm with you on every single point you make here, Hoodoo.

I don't even think Rob is as big of a problem as the specialized defensive coaches.

Those guys having the dirt on Payton/staying loyal and keeping their mouths shut through the bountygate saga has earned them a permanent spot.

It's really ironic when you think about how comfortable Payton was with cleaning house when he arrived in '06.

I agree with your sentiment. Poor coaching and talent evaluation on defense has been a yoke around our necks since CSP got here. That said, I think Loomis and CSP kept the nucleus of a championship caliber team together for nearly 10 years before the cap finally caught up with us. That's not too shabby. 2 NFC championship game appearances, a Super Bowl win, and 5 trips to the playoffs in 9 years isn't bad.

2010 we were bitten by injuries. 2011 was our year, but we shite the bed in SF, we all know what happened in 2012, and we never really recovered. Last year, we were a Super Bowl team on paper and went all in with the Byrd signing until that blew up in our faces too. Now we are old and need to rebuild.

We simply didn't draft/develop well enough to go on a Pittsburg/New England type run, but I'm not mad because those types of runs are the exception. It's time to face facts and start thinking about the future, but I will not shite on Brees and CSP over this.

I agree with your even-keeled approach.

We're not a couple pieces away from a superbowl.
We made some tough but good decisions this offseason.
We need to continue to do so to rebuild this team.

Still, these coaches are hurting us.
We could draft 3 defensive lineman in the upcoming draft, one might still be on the team in 4 years.
They just aren't being developed.

I think Payton took some needed steps with overhauling the scouting department, and so far this draft has looked like it'll be one of our better ones, but I agree, it hasn't gone far enough.

He's shaken things up on the margins without really addressing his sacred cows.

Ask yourself this: If McMahon, Johnson or Vitt is fired today, do you think any of them are hired by another NFL team?

Right.

It's brave to fire subordinates who are not doing their job, even if it makes you look too harsh.
It's selfish to fire everyone but yourself and your buddies.
