Was against the 49ers - I remember Madden and Sumerall had the call.

Less infamous than the Hornets/Spurs playoff fire.

Yep-49ers. I was sitting pretty much at eye level from it since I was in the very top row of one of the end zones.
I remember Montana was hurt and so was Steve Young so the Niners started Steve Bono.

That is some pretty random, obscure footage. I've never seen that viewpoint of the Dempsey kick.

I was relatively close to where the fire was falling. It was some kind of plastic that was burning after some pyrotechnics went off in connection with the halftime show. It burned for a while and finally started falling/dripping well into the 2nd half. It caught the grass on fire as well.

The guy that went into the rafters to put it out made the All-Madden team that year.

I was there ('91). They had indoors fireworks during halftime and somehow they ignited straps of burlap that was used to support sections of the "gondola" or metal framework that hung from the ceiling. A dude from the fireworks company climbed across the gondola to try to beat the fire out but all he had was another piece of burlap. THAT burlap caught fire and fell to the turf, where it was put out with a bucket of Gatorade. The NOFD station on Girod St. (?) watched all this of TV and started suiting up so they could hit the road when the call came.

The fire was the most exciting part of that game though Saints won like 10-3; won division that season.

Had that happened ten years earlier, they might have done just that.

My wife and I were there. Scored some free tickets for buying ads on a local radio station who used to carry the Saints. Our seats were second row from the top, between the 40's. I thought to myself during the fire that if this thing gets out of hand, were fricked. And it was the 49ers, and yes Bono started. Probably the most boring game I've eva been to at the SD.

I was there in 1991 on sidelines in my Saintsation uniform! The fire department showed up after they saw the "blaze" on TV. The turf had some burn marks on it afterwards. I think the smoke finally cleared early in the 4th quarter
