Saints RT Zach Strief has agreed to a restructured contract.

He's getting a well-deserved raise. Per Nick Underhill of the New Orleans Advocate, Strief's base salary for 2017 has been increased from $1 million to $1.7 million while his per game roster bonus was bumped up from $1.4 million to $1.7 million. Strief started every game at right tackle last season while earning PFF's No. 10 tackle grade out of 76 qualifiers.

does he deserve it yes, but why? why now???

for all intent and purpose he is declining and would be getting replaced next year or the year after, if he left it wouldn't be any sort of crushing blow to the team although it would require a roster replacement for him.

I just don't view him "at this point" as being a player they "must keep" or the team suffers.

while I won't say "I do not like this" im not sure if they needed to do anything beyond letting him play out his contract and then move on.

I'd rather give it to him than Benson's greedy arse family. It ain't like we are signing any high dollar free agents.

Probably give it to him now, he retires next year, and we save whatever cap

Backup? Retire? He is 33, he likely has a few more years left in him. Guy like Andrew Whitworth is 35, for reference. Sure, there is no where to go but down. But damn, how soon do we forget how hard it was to find a reliable tackle.

Strief is totally taken for granted by our fans. im not sure there is a guy in the SP era that has been brushed off and almost disrespected as much as Strief. We are talking about a 7th Rd pick going into his 12th year with our organization, the last 5 or 6 which he has been our most consistent and often times best OL. shite, the last few years he has graded as one of the BEST in the league. He doesn't mouth off, get in trouble, and he's out and about in the city more than ANY other Saint probably ever. Not to mention he's investing his money in the city with the brewery.

If Carl frickin Nicks gets in the Saint HOF, Strief may very damn well get a statue out front.

Just to be clear because the wording is weird, it's not $1.7 mil per game in roster bonuses. It's $1.7 mil total that can be earned in per game roster bonuses (so slightly more than $100k per game).

His cap hit increased by $1 mil total ($700k raise in salary and $300k raise in roster bonuses). 2018 was untouched. In other words this was a straight million dollar raise.

Also well said Gyno.

Though I wouldn't bet on him sticking around after next year (and he may become a cap casualty before next year if Ramcyzk is the real deal).

Except not everyone ages the same, plays the same, takes care of themselves the same. For all we know Strief can fall of a cliff. Just because Whitworth did it, does not mean Strief will.

It's not to say I hope that happens, I just don't think its a fair comparison.

He is one big mofo who has anchored the right for awhile. If he has something left in the tank, pay him.

That's interesting. I wonder if there was a handshake deal in place that he'd be rewarded.

More likely just showing the young guys that hard work can and will be rewarded, plus Strief truly does deserve it. Guy is a model player who anyone should strive to be.

It is a per game roster bonus. So that does that go to the question I posed the other day about the 45 man roster to say that in Week 12 if he is inactive that he doesn't get the extra 100K.

If so it may be motivation for him to fight to remain at a high level through out the 2017 season. At some point Ramczyk may replace him, but if he does it should be that Ramczyk has raised his level not that Strief's has dropped.

I don't think it's a handshake deal. I think it's is showing him he is still valued despite the drafting of first round tackles in the last couple years. He is one of Payton's most liked/respected players and is very tight with Drew. They thought he deserved a raise and gave him one to show him they still see him as an integral part of the team.
