Steve Gleason is the recipient of the 2024 Arthur Ashe Courage Award, ESPN officials announced Thursday.

The New Orleans resident and former Saints standout, who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2011, will receive the award at the nationally televised ESPY Awards ceremony July 11 in Los Angeles.

The award is considered one of the most prestigious in sports. It is given annually to recipients “whose contributions transcend sports” and “reflect the spirit of Arthur Ashe, possessing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost,” according to ESPN. Past winners include Muhammad Ali, Billy Jean King, Pat Tillman, Bill Russell and Jim Valvano, who famously delivered the “Never give up. Don’t ever give up” speech as the inaugural recipient at the 1993 ESPYs.

This is fantastic and most well deserved. He definitely has displayed an unwavering fight and desire to be positive despite being dealt an absolute trash of a hand. He's touched more people from a wheelchair and a robotic voice than most able bodied people.

However, I don't understand why the award shows announce all the winners ahead of time. It makes it much less interesting to watch, unless you have an affinity for who is getting the award.

I mean they’re not going to fly Steve and his team out just for potential to win.

Is Steve Gleason’s
lifespan something achievable for all people who have his disease or is he an outlier?

Is it just the level of treatment he gets?

because of all the awards that can be given, this one doesn't need to be a surprise like an Oscar/Emmy. the winner deserves to be told ahead of time and all the notoriety that comes with it.

as for this award, there is noone more deserving of it that Steve. honestly I'm more shocked he has not gotten the award soon, but regardless - no better recipient than him.

No White Flags!

Most only live 2-5 years.

Ok so he’s definitly an outlier, isn’t him and he’s just lucky or could most people with this disease live as long as him if they got his treatment.

and please don’t take this to mean I am calling out any kind of privilege. I am glad Steve is still with us. I just didn’t expect him to be this long.

I completely agree with you. He’s an outlier because his team can afford to continue his lifespan. That’s not taking anything away, that’s just facts. Most people have to choose how much debt they want to incur.

Not sure if it is related to the documentary on him but you can not watch that thing without losing your composure. Not a dry eye in the house.

guess it is too much to ask to have 1 thread about a great guy receiving a well deserved award, without you pathetic fricks bringing shite into it.

I'm genuinely curious about this as well - what kind of treatment does he get that most people do not (or can not)?

Such a terrible disease all around. Good for Steve to receive this award and it is well deserved.

Sorry to wrinkle your panties madam, but the ESPY's lost all credibility when they gave it to Bruce Jenner.

But congratulations to Steve, if anyone deserves it, it's him, not some dude who got breast implants and now calls himself a woman. He still has a dick, balls and a prostate.

oooooh you really got me on that one - not sure how i can recover.

and I'm not worked up at all - in fact it is the opposite - you came into a thread paying respects to Steve on a well deserved award and made it about ESPN and Jenner - so it seems to me that you are the one that is worked up.

all you had to say was congrats Steve and left the other bullshite out - but couldn't.

I watched firsthand my dad die from ALS in 1992. he fought for 3 years with that disease, to the point he begged me to one day shoot him, They say living with ALS is like living in a glass coffin. I wouldnt wish that disease on my worst enemy

My dad made it 3 years with ALS in 1992, it staarted with a slight uncontrollable limp, then worked its way to the other leg, then to his arms, hands and finally his vocal cords. The thing about ALS is that it leaves a person 100% mentally sharp, but trapped in their own body, What finally did my dad in was that it got his breathing last
