Sporting News Mock Draft: Saints draft Jalen Hurts

LINK
29. New Orleans Saints (10-2)
Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma
Hurts is the latest dual-threat quarterback to thrive in Lincoln Riley's system, following 2019 No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray. The Saints shouldn't expect Drew Brees to hang it up in 2020, but they are unlikely to re-sign Teddy Bridgewater and need to start looking for Brees' long-term successor. Sean Payton should see many qualities in Hurts (6-2, 218 pounds) he likes, including leadership, pocket awareness and the ability to throw anywhere on top of his great scrambling ability.
Thought it had a few interesting thoughts in the blurb.
eta: we can then maybe use hurts and kamara to trade for Burrow. duh.

That’s fricking ridiculous. We are drafting at 32.

Hurts has a cool demeanor. He has the strong arm. Add a speedy wideout and we have Thomas, speed, Cook, and Jalen's running ability.

This seems like the perfect draft to get a backup to DB who will eventually be our franchise QB, I’m just not sure Hurts is the correct pick... I’m sure CSP could make it work. Imagine plays with both Hurts and Taysom in.

These types of articles are fricking pointless at this time of the year

<-- Would melt
There were a ton of people here melting when they thought we traded up for Lamar Jackson when we got Marcus Davenport.
I learned to just let things play out when it comes to rookies.

Does he have an NFL arm? I remember his passing being pretty damn subpar.

i've seen him fling 45-50 yard passes on the money like it wasn't a big thing. I don't think he has a lesser arm than Joe Burrow.

Hurts worked hard in the last two years to improve his passing. I would think Sean Payton could create quite the scheme for him.
I do not know if he is the guy but I do trust Payton to decide if he is the guy.

It's this simple:
If we draft a QB this year, then Payton sees TayNorris as nothing more than the fantastic multithreat player that he is
If we don't, then Payton sees TayNorris as the future Steve Young that he has been comparing him to
Whichever path Payton chooses, I am on board with. 2 Super Bowls is enough to convince me he knows what he is doing. I don't melt for any of his draft picks. If it is indeed Hurts, then I welcome aboard my future star QB with enthusiastically open arms.

We don't have a second round pick right? So if we draft Hurts in the first and Brees comes back, then we are basically standing pat for one last season with Brees? No Offensive lineman to replace Peat or back up Armstead? No receiver to replace the giant sinkhole that is everyone not named Mike Thomas?
That seems unlikely to me.

well we'd have a shite ton more cap space to use for these needs in the future cause we'll be ruling out paying someone post drew 30 mill a year. its all give and take.

It's doesnt exist in a vacuum as there are a litany of scenarios that could play out.
We dont know what happens with Brees.
Armstead's cap hit jumps even more in 2020. With his injuries, he could be a trade candidate. His dead cap decreases big time as well, he could even be a cut candidate.
Some of the young guys we wont be able to sign can be traded for draft capital.
And even if none of that happens, some of our best draft work has come in the mid rounds of the draft.

True, but you can still do that drafting a QB in the next offseason...
You know the other thing is we don't need a bunch of bodies, so maybe we package up some picks and move into the second to grab somebody.

ok, and we paid the most expensive qb backup this year too. backup qb's don't go without a price tag and cost neither. there's a million ways to spin out scenarios.

If Brees stays for another year I don't think the Saints have a choice but to draft a QB in the first..And if Hurts is there I don't have a problem with it...

we're paying drew 21 over next 2 years and that's without him re-signing. interesting offseason.

The last two QBs the Saints were interested in were Mahomes and Jackson...I'd say they have an eye for a potential future QB
