Only smart compared to you. The Saints will have no trouble paying FA this offseason - most of the cash in any deal will hit in later years when our cap is clean.

So the same exact process Loomis has been using for years that got us into this mess? Yea that’s very smart…

Other teams have 80-100 million in cap room and we sitting at 8 with the 2nd highest in dead money on the cap only b/c the jets traded off their stars. But we in great shape.

This is the time to pay free agents, do you not understand the rookie qb window?

We are paying for free agents. Ones from years ago. It’s time to get the cap cleaned up. Maybe the following year.

Just keep drafting young cheap guys and play them.

We’d have to sign a free agent close to the same amount for what Pickens signs for to lose the comp pick. Unless we sign more than we lost like what happened with Dalton. I’m guessing Loomis learned the hard way when he found out we weren’t getting that 3rd with his blunder.

That's my point. Let's play the hypothetical, Mickey used a 3rd for Pickens, instead of the 4th for Vele. Pickens does for the Saints what he's doing in Dallas and demands to be paid accordingly. Saints are forced to let him walk due to financial constraints.

As soon as they become players in FA, they will risk losing that comp pick for Pickens. As sited in your link, we lost on comp picks for Marcus (5 years $70M) & Armstead (5 years $75M) because of Maye (3 years $22.5M) & Dalton (1 year $3M).

Hell, just look at the fact they only have about 40 players under contract next year. They will have to make some offseason moves. May not have any individual signing at the equivalent of Pickens, but the signings do not need to be $ for $.

Mickey fricking Loomis at work

But don't worry, if they don't resign Taysom, Cam, or Demario; they will quickly surpass the Jets dead cap space for 2026. Saints currently sitting at $65.8M. Taysom has $13.7M in voided contract waiting to hit that dead money, Cam has $18.8M, and Demario has $14.3M

With the Jets at $71.3M, we will surpass that with any one of those guys not extending before the league new year. But to be fair to Loomis, Jets have another $13.4M in voided contracts that "could" hit their books. So we may need 2 of those guys to not sign in order to pass them.

It’s why I keep saying we don’t have all this cap space like some people on here believe. We need at least another year of not signing anyone and playing rookies.

The Jets are only first b/c they traded Gardner and Williams and cut Lazard. All big money deals. Guess all that guaranteed money accelerated. If not for that we’d easily be first.

To be fair it was in April. If we go back to April I bet we can find all kinds of posts where YOU and 99% of this board were WRONG. In fact, I know I can.

I’m not an expert on the comp pick formula. You sign less than what you lose. But Mickey really dropped the ball on that. I think we would have been ok signing Dalton but since he started all those games it bumped his value up.

Either way, you don’t sign him or tell him to wait. It’s whatever did with Honey Badger. I’m sure there were plenty of other backup QBs he could have signed if he refused.

I agree, but you know Loomis is sitting there and sees we have our QB so now let’s go scratch that itch. It won’t be as easy as it has been in the past, but there are ways to create some significant money to make some moves.

Not saying I agree with this move, but you know you can’t keep Mickey from spending Gayle’s money
